Nightweaned but waking earlier and earlier for morning nursing

My twins will turn 2 in a few weeks. I nightweaned them about 2 months ago with a lot of success. They nursed to sleep around 6:30-7pm and slept until about 5:30-6am when they would wake to nurse. They would nurse and we would get up. Over the past month ds has been waking earlier and earlier for the morning nursing. This morning was 3:30am. He sits up, asks for milk, lies down for a minute, fusses, sits up again, etc... until I finally nurse him around 5-5:30am. He also usually wakes up his twin sister with this 1-2 hour long squirming, fussing. We've offered water and he drinks it but still doesn't go back to sleep. I've also tried nursing him earlier hoping he would at least fall back asleep but he doesn't. And I hesitate to try that too often. The reason I nightweaned is because they were both waking every 1.5 to 2 hours all night long and I do not want to go back to that again .

Mornings are exhausting and long because they are so darn grumpy. Is this a stage that will pass? Even it it was teeth or a growth spurt you'd think it would be over by now. It seems like it's been going on forever (a month really) and it's getting worse. We've seriously been awake since 3:30am this morning .

For us, we had to move DS into his own room and have DH go to him until "wakeup" time, which for him is usually around 6 AM, after we nightweaned. He will go right back to sleep for DH, but if I were to nurse him he'd stay latched on forever and then wakeup for the day super early as well (as if 6 isn't early enough!!)... could you try something like that? Or some type of "alarm" that goes off when it is time to nurse and wakeup? Other than that I would just be very firm that "no milk until 6 AM" or whenever you decide is appropriate. Kudos to you for nursing TWINS day and night for almost 2 years! You must be exhausted, you deserve some good sleep!

Sorry, no advice here really, just lots of s and empathy. I've been desperately seeking a solution for our identical situation with DD, who is almost 33 mos!

Ack!!

This morning wasn't as bad. I nursed him at about 4am and eventually he drifted off again around 5am and slept until 5:30am. And because it's the weekend I got dh up with the kids at 6am and I got to go back to sleep until 8am .

We have tried dh alone with him and me sleeping elsewhere and he doesn't cry to nurse but still just doesn't go back to sleep.

It feels like there's not much we can do except wait it out .
