Banning is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

I just read the whole thing. amazing, and very in depth about so many issues surrounding circumcision, refuting lots of arguments for it.
It's fascinating how different doctors' stances can be on this when you compare American policy statements with the rest of the world. Obvious how the cultural norms can be blinding to the facts and ethics involved.

Yay!
Also, I find it important that they site "panic attacks" as one of the potential side effects of circumcision. I think all of us non-circers are aware of the psychological effects, but such things don't seem to be typically discussed by the medical community. The "do it while he's just a baby, he won't remember it" attitude seems much more common.

Okay...so according to this statement 13 million circumcisions are performed world wide each year. Assuming a 56% circumcision rate in boys in the US as sited in the article (I really do think it is higher--saddly--at least it sure seems that way here in eastern PA! ) that means that 1.12 million baby boys are circed in America each year--or 8.6% of all circumcisions performed world wide.
Our population is approximately 300 million, and the world wide population is 6.7 billion. So 4.5% of people on earth live in America.
We've got almost 90% more than our "fair share" of circs being performed in America.

(editted to update the numbers because I started with only 50% of baby boys being circed in America...the truth is worse than that.)
