Nanny question... does this count for a sick day?

We have a temporary nanny (for just over 2 months, until the end of June) who comes for 5 hours/day and is wonderful. We signed a contract at the beginning which says that she is eligible for one paid sick day a month. She hasn't been sick yet, but this week she informed me that she needs to take Monday off to be with her husband while gets some sort of treatment at the hospital. We didn't talk about it yet, but I'm wondering if that sort of thing generally counts as a sick day? I'm thinking not, but I want to be fair.

Thanks for your advice!

I'd say it does count as a sick day. Unless she would rather take it off w/o pay and save her sick day for another time.

Yeah, I'd call it a sick day.

I'd say it's a sick day. Most employers have a clause that you can use 50% of your sick days to be with sick family members. It would establish a good relationship (even though it's short-term) to let her take it as such.

Yep, I would leave it up to her if she wants it unpaid or use a sick day. At my workplace, a sick day can be used for self or immediate family member (spouse, child).

I would leave it up to her. I know that my employer defines "sick day" as either being sick myself, having any type of medical appt, or being home with an immediate family member who is sick.

That wouldn't qualify as a sick day for my DH nor for me (two different employers), but for my nanny...absolutely.
