I like this one:
http://babynamesworld.parentsconnect.com/
it offers tons of way to search. I don't know that it always offers the best meanings, but that can always be found elsewhere.

Also:
http://www.babynamer.com/
Has lots of extra info about each name.

Otherwise, google will help with finding a number of them.

As far as books go, no recs there, sorry!

I'm liking http://www.nameberry.com right now.

And I really like the Baby Name Wizard book, where you can look up names by sibling- as in, if you like the name "blah" you might like "blah, blah, blah" they somehow score them by a bunch of different things, so they aren't logical, rhyming, etc. but it works.

If you want really unique names, the GIANT baby name book you want is "A World of Baby Names" by Teresa Norman. It's huge, it's organized by cultures/countries, and it has almost 600 pages of names (over 30,000 of them) that include pronounciation, meaning, history, associations, etc. Pretty incredible resource, and many MANY unique names.

For simple look-ups, I have "From Aaron to Zoe" and find it really helpful.
