On welfare? Check it!

So I am a low income single mom in Berkeley CA. I applied at the county as was accepted into the TANF Welfare to Work Program. As part of my case I get no-cost share medi-cal, food stamps (in form of EBT card), and a 563 dollar monthly grant for my family of two. With my rent for my one bedroom apartment at $500 a month (inclusive of utilities) it's a challenge to live on $63 a month. The unemployment rate is 12% in California and news broadcasters recently stated for the bay area it's more like 23% because suck a high percentage of tech companies are located here and have busted.

Two weeks ago I heard about a program run by Alameda county called AC Hire. It gets it's funding from the Federal Goverment's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which earmarked funds for a new TANF Emergency Fund to assist states in expanding services during the recession. This program is open to unemployed mothers on welfare, and it pays any employer who will hire me 80% of my salary until the end of September when the federal funding expires.

So I found an Non-profit that is taking a hit because of the economy who is willing to hire me to do their marketing. I will be paid $20 and hour of which they will end up paying $2 an hour for 20 hours a week. They can't afford to pay anymore, and it will be about $1300 a month take home for me after all CA taxes. I will go from living on $563 to $1300, even though I will be loosing my monthly grant and have a extrem cut in food-stamps this is a great improvement. Did you know that there are programs like this all over AMERICA?

Check it out, the program is only approved to run through Sept. 31, 2010 so it's not a long term solution but it will mean HUGE things for my little family. Here's a website to start you off! Please post back on this page if you do end up finding a job through one of these programs... I want to hear!

It's a long page, but if you scroll down to the end there is information broken down by each state http://www.clasp.org/issues/pages?ty...stance&id=0001

That's great! I'm glad you were able to find something that works for you. I agree, $563 is not a lot to live off when most of it goes to rent.
