I tend to lean toward primal fitness. I LOVE to lift heavy things! I do a lot of bodyweight exercises as well. I am going to change up my routine a bit and do a dedicated sprint day, and try to incorporate more "moving slowly" time. I have been primalish working out for about a year, with the lifting heavier things taking more and more of a focus over that time, and my body composition has changed dramatically in that time. The more muscles I could see, the more comfortable I became with lifting heavy. Mark does a great job of addressing women lifting on his site.

Hey all. I'm also trying to get into a more primal way of fitness. I definitely need to start doing a lot more walking. I'm trying to add lifting heavy things in a couple a days a week plus sprints 1-2 days. I have two kettlebells and I do workout with them sometimes. I really want to get a sledgehammer and try to do that as a workout. I'm finding that if I take my kids out to the backyard I can exercise while they play, but the baby is better about letting me exercise, than my 3 year old who wants me to play with her. Which I know can be good exercise too, but it needs to be additional not instead of.

Today I did 3 circuits of the following

30 jumps with a rope
6 push ups (on a 18 in wall in the back yard,)
10 two arm swings with 30lb kettlebell
10 rows each arm with 15lb kettlebell
10 squats holding 30lb kettlebell

I'd like to work up to actual pushups but the 6 on the little half wall is actually an improvement for me. Also I get bored easily so I need to change things up to keep myself interested. I'd love to see you ladies post your workouts each day to inspire me to do something new and different.

This article is hilarious:

S. H. I. I. T.

I have been trying HARD to get back into shape. I have never worked out, never needed to. I worked in landscaping from age 18 to 26, needless to say I was buff. Then with dd's food intolerances and my postpartum depression/anxiety our generally overall crappy health, things are just finally getting to where I can do SOMETHING for myself. I want to get back in shape. I need to gain about 10-15 lbs of muscle to feel good, I only weigh about 115-118 right now and I feel like an unfeminine beanpole, my butt is flat, my not-even-an-A-cup boobs are sagging, and I have skin hanging loose everywhere. I need to fill it back up with muscle! I want to go back to work someday!

So I am doing the squat challenge starting this week with a friend from our homeschool co-op.
I have been sprinting and playing a lot more with dd. I need better shoes, though. I have Indian feet, wide ball and narrow heel, and I can't get anything to fit right. Would LOVE vibram five fingers, need to see if I can find some to try on. (I once walked 12 miles barefoot around an island when I was 10, we were camping there, I'm still a barefooter as much as possible.)
I am trying to decide what else to ease into for upper body work. I may have to get into the squat challenge a little more before I can do any other body weight exercises - 'cause my lower body is too sore and can't contribute, Maybe I will see what we have for weights around here. I really like the look of the shovelglove workouts, since my former self did lots of work with tools!

I did my 4 week exhaustion test for push-ups yesterday.
I did 30. So I went back to week 3 and try to build up my strength a bit more.
Week3 day1 last set of push-ups-try to do at least 20.
I did 31. not sure what to do with that.
I wish I could say my squat challenge is going well. I mean it is, but I get so bored doing so many squats. Makes me wonder if I'm doing them right. I'm up to doing 65reps before I get too bored to continue. Wth is up with that?

That S.H.I.I.T article was hilarious too funny!

We have a new park just down the street. They redid an old park and put in some pretty sweet playground toys(including tons of monkey bars) and...
an outdoor gym for adults its all pnuematic(sp?) which is awesomesauce. Elliptical, rower, leg press, pull-up bars-its very cool

I had quite the primal workout last weekend. I danced for 4 hours! OMG my legs and abs were in pain! lol I jumped up and down and boggied HARD! (I also got two-stepped on by some wanna be cowboys! )

I don't know if there's something weird about my form (it looks really correct to dh who used to train) but I buggered up my tailbone after my last exhaustion test for pushups. Any ideas what I did wrong? My plank form was good, butt wasn't in the air, if anything maybe too low? Hmmmmm I'm kinda gun shy to get back on the horse as I've been crippled for over a week. Shooting pains down my legs when I sit and horible aching in my tailbone area. (I broke it for the third time birthing my son. )

That article IS hilarious! I am also looking to get back in shape. I have never really worked out besides cardio stuff, yoga, etc. But now that I am getting older I am really feeling weak and flabby lately! I want to feel strong and fit.

AND, I have the EXACT same feet. Exactly! It is very hard to find shoes that fit. I finally had to go to a podiatrist because I was getting these horribly painful calluses on the outer portion of the sole of my foot, on the ball of my foot, and he said it is because I have been wearing shoes that are way too narrow for the ball of my foot for most of my life. I never thought I needed a wide shoe because the heel is very narrow, so wide shoes usually slipped so much in the heel. One thing that I have found that helps, at least when buying a lace-up sneaker-type shoe, is to buy the wide but then be sure you lace them all the way up through those holes that usually go off to the side a bit at the top. They also make some pads that are kind of like peel-and-stick that you can insert at the heel of you shoe, and it helps take up some of that extra space.

Hi!

I've been doing Crossfit style workouts for almost 2 years now and we eat primal style.

Do any of you read Mark's Daily Apple.com? I love his site. He even had an article about dancing!

As for those of you asking about pull ups...I was able to do kipping pull ups after about 8 months of losing weight and doing strength training. It took me about a year to be able to do strict pull ups. When trying to do pull ups and carrying a little extra weight, leaning up is the first thing to do.

Here are a few good progressions to getting started with them though is to do jumping pull ups. Find a box or something sturdy and jump up with your chin over the bar and then bend your knees back down, fully extending your arms. You can google a video to see them.

Another one is to do reverse pull ups. Put a box off to the side of the bar while standing on it close enough to pull your chin to the bar. then slowly let yourself down.

The modificaiton that I like best is to use rubber bands from ironwoodyfitness.com. these are how I was able to work up to them. Using rings can also help because you can lower them to the ground and do reverse push ups.

LisaMarie - I am working on muscle ups too. I am so close and have been for awhile. I just did my first triathlon so for awhile I was only swimming, biking and running and haven't had access to rings to even be able to practice. Hope you get it soon!

I wanted to give a few primal meal ideas:

meat sauce over sauteed cabbage. I slice the cabbage thin like fettucine. then I can still boil some pasta for anyone else who wants to eat it.

almond meal muffins.

Our family was fortunate to find an Excalibur food dehydrator for sale on Craigslist so we snatched up the awesome deal! I made my first batch of jerky from grass fed meat last week. I'm waiting for it to go on sale because it's really not much of a savings ounce for ounce but it was really good. Can't wait to make some living foods and our own dried fruit.

so, those of you who have vibrams... what style do you have? And is the fit close to your normal size? Where's the best place to order?

I have a pair of black classics. I am waiting for a pair of pink/orange sprint's. I ordered the sprint's from Kayak Shed, but they are back ordered. I am *hoping* that they will ship like they are supposed to the last week of June. I ordered the black classics from REI. They were in stock and came within a week. I like the classics for easy on and off, wearing around, I work out in them. I think the sprints will be better for running because they have the strap to hold them on tighter. I measured my foot, it was an exact size 39, they fit perfectly.
