Big baby growth pattern

Hi All!

K just had her 2 month check and she's growing right along. But then I compared her current stats to my other children at 2 months and I was amazed.

K was 10lb 8oz, 20.75" at birth - 12lb 10oz, 23.5" long at 2 months
DD was 8lb 3oz, 20" at birth - 12lb 9.6oz, 22.75" long at 2 months
DS was 8lb 4oz, 20" at birth - 13lb 11 oz, 24" long at 2 months


So I'm noticing that K seems to be falling into her older sister's growth pattern maybe? I never thought she was meant to be so big at birth. I just can't believe that she has "gained" 2lbs since birth and that my son had gained 5 in the same amount of time! WOW!

Any other bigger babies out there and when did they find their growth pattern?

I really don't think K is "slow to grow." I think she is getting on her right growth pattern.

I'd tend to agree with you. My babies weren't big at birth, but I do know others who had bigger babies at birth whose growth pattern was fairly slow the first few months and then picked up again. Also, depending on their exact age, it could be more or less of a difference too. My two gained as much as a pound every two weeks sometimes (I think DD1 gained a pound and a half in one two-week period.) I was just comparing my two the other day too.

DD1 was 7lbs 3oz and 21" long at birth. At 8 1/2 weeks she was 12lbs 4oz and 22.5" long.
DD2 was 7lbs 8oz and 20" long at birth. This week at 10 1/2 weeks she was 12lbs even and almost 24" long.

So DD1 was lighter and longer at birth, but heavier and shorter two months later. One of the reasons I don't put much stock in those growth charts some doctors seem to love so much is that each child seems to have their very own growth pattern and few fit in a perfect curve.

i don't have any other babies to compare him to but Ruben was...

9lb 12oz 21" at birth and is getting on 15lbs and ~23" at 2months

I don't have all of that in front of me, but I do know that at 6 weeks, they both weighed about the same. DD1, who was 6 lbs, 10 oz at birth weighed 12 lbs, 10 oz at 6 weeks. DD2, who was 8 lbs at birth weighed 12 lbs at 6 weeks. So DD1 gained a LOT more in the first 6 weeks than DD2. She started off almost a pound and a half smaller and wound up 10 oz heavier at the same age. I guess it has to happen, because being a big baby doesn't always (often?) predict your size as an adult, so they can't just stay big forever. My friend's baby was almost 12 pounds at birth, but she's a tiny little girl now.

I realize neither of my girls are big, but I was just replying for two reasons. The first is that both of mine wound up bigger than yours at 2 months, despite being small to average babies, so birth size is really irrelevant, as far as I can tell. The second is that mine were not even close to the same birth weight, but still wound up being close to the same size once they had a few weeks on them.

And I keep re-reading that last paragraph and it sounds like I think we're having some kind of competition to have big 2-month-olds or something. lol Not the case at all. I was just thinking how weird it was that my average sized babies were so big at 6 weeks.

DD was 8 lbs 9 oz at birth, 11 lbs 8 oz at 2 month apt.
DS1 was 8 lbs 3 oz at birth, 11 lbs 14 oz at 2 months
Avery was 9 lbs 8 oz at birth and 14 lbs 4 oz at his 2 month apt (though my scale at home put him over 15 lbs...)

Soooo, I dunno. Avery's just way out there compared to the other two. I have no idea what to expect.

ETA... both boys were 24 inches at 2 months and DD was 23 3/4 inches at 2 months.

Wow! Jenna my baby is almost 15 pounds already, too. He is 91/2 weeks. He was 8.7 lbs at birth. My other three were teeny. I am really curious, where he'll be in a few months.

My experience is that every baby grows differently. DS1 was 8lb 2 oz at birth and 20lbs at 4 months, DS2 was 8lb 12oz at birth and 20lbs at 15 months, and DS3 was 7lb 14 oz at birth and 18 lbs at 2 months.
