Question about early PPAF and fertility

I just got either my 1st or 2nd PP AF last night. Yay! A little background: DD is 16 months and still nursing often. I had mirena put in at 7 weeks post partum and had it removed 55 days ago. I thought i had my first PP AF a week before removal. It lasted a day and requied tampons...hadn't had anything more than a tiny spot before that the entire year I had mirena in place so I don't think it was breakthrough bleeding but I can't know for sure. Once I got mirena removed my period was no where to be seen so I figured that was bc of the nursing. AF finally showed last night after a 55 day wait!!

Here is my question. Again it is very light and I doubt it will last very long. I am wondering if I am fertile, despite my periods being so light? I'd like to start TTC ASAP. Are periods typically light when they first come back? Is it bc I am still nursing?

Thanks!

After I I had my mirena removed, I used hormonal b/c for two cycles and then d/c'd it. My first cycle after that was 34 days, and I confirmed ovulation by charting. My period was moderate flow and moderate length.

If you're not charting, I think it might be good to start so you can get figure out if you're ovulating and when.

Yup, another vote here for charting. To find out if you are fertile, you will need to know if you are ovulating. The best way to find that out (and to also find out about any other issues that could tell you about your body's potential to conceive) is to chart your cycle. In my opinion, the best resource to read is a book called Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. You can also chart online at a free site called fertilityfriend.com

Good luck!

I had mine removed and the next day had a very thick and chuncky period. I do not have regular cycles ever so I do not know how long it will take for yours to come back to normal. I think your light period is because you are bfing. I have heard women are really fertile right after they have their mirena removed so good luck!!

I have been charting since the day after it was removed. I never had a thermal shift so I think the entire 55 days was annovulatory. I did have a couple patches of EWCM but not shift - so perhaps my body was attempting to O but never did.

I'm just wondering if a light AF means you arne't fertile? Like I don't know if the lining would have been thick enough to sustain an embryo?

You are asking if you are fertile... if you aren't ovulating, you aren't fertile. It's great that you are charting because once you do start ovulating again, you'll know it more definitively. You're right that the endometrium needs to be thick enough to support an embryo's implantation, but even before that happens, you would need to ovulate in order to get that embryo.

one of the ways mirena works is by thinning the endometrium, but, because of where it sits, it does it using teeny tiny doses of progesterone. it might take a cycle or two to get thicker. it may or may not interfere with ovulation while it's in, and afm, i o'd 11 days after i got mine out. your delayed o might be from mirena lingering affects, but i'd put my money on it's from bf'ing.

there is a bf'ing ttc thread here- have you visited there yet? it is totally possible to get pg while bf'ing, but it is a little like swimming up stream. your cycles are likely to be long and may or may not be ovulatory. i guess you will just have to wait and see how it goes. for me again, i got my first pp af at 1 year after each of my kids. then, i got 2 or 3 afs during the following year until they weaned. i dont know if i was o'ing then or not, well, except for after ds3, i got pg when he was 15 mths, having just had that 1 af when he was 12 mths. i wasnt trying, not quite sure how that happened.

good luck!
