Advice please re. NB stash!

We've been out of diapers for 4 years now, and I'd gotten rid of ALL our baby stuff. Now we're having another, so give me advice about what you would prefer to have on hand for a newborn because I feel like I completely forget how many diapers we used per day, what worked well at what age, and even which brands of diapers I loved back then. (I'm already set for about 6 mos and up though with tons of full-size prefolds and donated covers from a friend, which will work fine.)

Give me ideas for your practical budget-conscious NB stash, and your dream NB stash if money were no option...I may splurge on just one or two diapers that are "fancy".

Here's what I aim for when buying for a new baby. This would be a mix of newborn and size small stuff (maybe a few medium things). I buy mostly size small though since the newborn stage is so fast, though I do like to have a few nb things. I also like to just go ahead and spend what I need to to make it very convienient for me. I never use sposies, at all. So I like to make sure I have everything that I could possibly want/need laying around. I wash every 2-3 days.

-12-24 prefolds (I do indian, unbleached prefolds)
-4-8 BSWW covers or thirsties covers (some people like prowrap covers, me not so much)
-1-2 wool covers for nightime
-4-12 pockets (I like fuzzi bunz, but some people hate them). To save money you could buy some one size fits all diapers instead, though I've never found any that I like. Others swear by bg.
-Extra inserts for pockets (or you can just use the prefolds as extra inserts)
-Maybe 1-3 Bumkins AIO's (or any prefered AIO), they're not all that absorbant, but they're very trim for outings and cute outfits.
-Maybe some cloth liners, but I never really use them like I think I will.

-A good diaper pail
-2 good bags for pail
-diaper sprayer
-cloth wipes
-big brand new bottle of diaper safe laundry detergent
-baking soda or the odor disks for the pail
-some tea tree oil for when the diapers could use it

However, everybody has different opinions about what makes a good/complete stash etc. Just like some people love fitteds w/ good covers, and they've just never been my things. Congrats on the baby and happy shopping.

My ideal nb stash would be a bunch of used fitteds like kl0's, bear bottoms, or others. At least 15. I got some off brand on diaperswappers and liked them a lot. I think I paid $5 max for each one. When you consider that I didn't use covers, it was close to what I would spend for each pf/cover change.
I'd go coverless for a summer baby, or with fleece pants or fleece jammies for a winter baby.

I'd also want a dozen pf's and a couple covers for trifolding them in.

same situation as OP...new baby coming after 6.5 years, I don't know what to buy or how much to buy. I was going to put together a post with what I thought I should get, but can I crash this and add my planned stash and you wise mamma's comment?

ps. my hopes are to get a stash that I only have to buy once...get enough NB stuff to never have to use sposies and then move to one size dipes after that.

My budget nb stash would be:

36 PFs--depending on expected size of baby, either newborn or small. Newborn size necessary for 6lb DD1, useless on 8lb DD2
6 newborn/small covers--I like Imse Vimse organic cotton on tiny babies but would probably get 4 OC and 2 imse soft wraps for going out/longer times between changes
3 heavy nighttime fitteds
2 disana wool pull-ons for night
liners
wipes
snappis
wetbags

Small sizes of all the above will get you to about 15lbs at which point you can start using one size diapers. DD2, despite being a monster at birth, didn't hit 15lbs until she was 8months so we got our money's worth out of the smalls!

My NON-budget nb stash would be:
36 nb fitteds, either ME sandys or (gasp!) goodmamas. Sandys are great on newborns but the ME wraps give my kids a rash. Goodmama nb diaps look gorgeous but SO expensive!
6 nb/small covers, mix of IV organic cotton & softwraps (or ME rikkis)
2 or 3 fancy wool covers, luxe or similar
2 disana wool pull-ons for night time
wipes
liners
wetbags

In either case, I wouldn't skimp on covers. No need to buy luxury stuff but covers can make or break your stash. The Imse Vimse ones are the only ones that don't give my DDs a rash around the legs, they're a great fit and they do not leak, not even newborn bf blowouts. Bummis would be my second choice but I don't like the fit as much.

My plan this time around is a metric @$$ton of prefolds (we're on limited water delivery so need to limit our number of laundry loads) and wool. I like Disana and may have to splurge on a few for overnights, but plan to knit most of it myself.

Also, PUL covers, but this is hard to recommend because fit is SO kid-specific. DS could NOT fit properly into a Bummis until he started walking and slimmed down because he had these gigantic thighs and a ridiculously tiny waist. Any time we'd get a snug fit around his waist, he'd have red marks on his thighs. For us, we needed a gussted cover (Thirsties really worked well).

My recommendation is that even for 100% prefold mama's, that you get 4-6 velcro fitteds for middle of the night changes. Being able to change a diaper and stay half-asleep is a lifesaver

Newborns have really runny poo, and my babes all end up with chicken legs, so I always try to find something that will fit snugly around the thighs..

I really like newborn nanipoo fitteds, but buying a slew of them is really not the most economical choice

Most babes need about 36 diapers, and I recommend 6-8 covers per size. 6 if you are using covers that are washing machine friendly (like PUL), but more if you are going mainly wool because they mainly need to be handwashed and they take so darn long to dry- they might be "drying" for a couple of days.

I also recommend about 6 aios for the diaper bag. They can be really handy for doctor appts, diaper changes at church, etc even if you don't take your babe out of the house much at first, there are some necessary trips that you probably want something simple since changing areas vary.

If you go mainly with prefold diapers (by far the most economical choice), I would look into covers that have leg gussets to get a nice snug fit around the legs.. I ordered some wahm ones that look well made. Bella Tessori I think they are called, but other brands also have them.

I'm not even PG yet so take my ideas with a grain of salt!

I've collected up a few KL0s, for ease of use. I will splurge on 2 2 packs of Rumparooz lil Joeys for out and about, since they'll resell for close to retail anyway. Besides that, 90% of my stash will be indian & chinese PFs. I already have a couple dozen, so one more dozen with the NB proraps I traded for will be cheap.

From there, at maybe 2 or 3 months of age, we will go into the OS pockets, contours etc from my current DD.

Yeah...I'm already coveting the goodmamas that I see on the trading post and on diaperswappers. They are SO beautiful, and seem so well made! I think I'll wait to splurge on those till we're past the NB stage.

I was glad to hear good things about imse vimse covers too...a friend gave me a few used wool ones and they seem so well made. And I just picked up a bunch of almost new thirsties wraps for $3/each from craigslist!
