Request for birthday cake recipes

Thread Starter
My dd's 1st birthday is coming up in July and I want to bake her a little cake that she can dig into, have fun with and make a great mess of. However, I don't want to give her a cake loaded with sugar. I'm especially having a hard time finding frosting recipes that don't contain enough sugar to cause a water buffalo to go into diabetic shock.

I don't mind it being sweet, I just want it to be healthy more than sugar loaded. So, does anyone have any recipes that they particularly enjoy and would recommend? Thanks to everyone in advance!!!

I've got nothing but my son turns 1 in July too. I want a healthier cake recipe for him also. He's still mostly EBF and cake is not a food I think I will be introducing soon! I hope someone has some ideas!

Im not sure how traditional you are wanting but I made my girl a pancake cake. I use this little omelet pan, I think it is like 4 inches across an 1 1/2 deep. You could also use a small cake pan and bake it, I think. I made three and stacked them. I topped them with frozen bluberries that I warmed up a bit and added a tiny bit of maple sugar and sliced bananas. It was messy and she LOVED it! I also made another cake for the grown ups btw. hope that helps!

To GoldmanBaby09: DD is still mostly EBF as well. She enjoys the few fruits and veggies she tried thus far, but like you I'm not quite ready to introduce her to cake quite yet.

To danalion: What a neat idea! DD loves bananas. I haven't tried her on blueberries yet, but if her fondness for fruit thus far is any indication, she love those too!

You could also try a "healthier" version of a muffin / cupcake (banana bread style) and decorate it.
I usually make frosting with cream cheese, fresh whipping cream, and raw cane sugar (plus a little bit of real vanilla) but I'm not sure whether you want to expose her to dairy products yet.

we put off the cake till the second birthday. I personally felt for our family that my DD (who was didn't start solids until almost 7 mo and was mostly still getting nutrition from breastmilk at 12 mo) didn't need that sort of food so early in her life.

We still don't do refined sugar but by her 2nd birthday she wanted a cake so I made her a pumpkin cake. I used agave and maple syrup as the sweeteners and threw in some fruit sweetened chocolate chips. For frosting I mixed cream cheese with maple syrup. It was delicious!
