is it normal for a week old to sleep this much?

Never thought I'd be posting this, lol. DD1 didn't sleep a straight night until she was 7yo and DD2 is 2.5yo and just now wakes only 1x night.

Since 3 days old, my baby would sleep all night if I didn't wake her. And she sleeps hard. Like I forgot to set the alarm last night and I woke up on my own. She been asleep just over 6 hrs and I had to totally strip her, turn on light, sit her up on my legs, etc...to wake her enough to eat for 10 min or so.

Her 1 wk well baby was stellar. She was a super very tiny tough jaundice at birth but it worked itself out really quickly.

Birth was easy, she was 39wk, 8lb7oz, it back at birth weight now a week later, no drugs during labor.

Is this normal?! I think she would sleep 8hrs if I didn't wake her. I've been really good about waking her to eat, just making sure we moved the jaundice out in a timely manner.

My DS was the same for about a week or two. I couldn't believe my luck and it made for a very easy recovery. However, my midwives encouraged me to wake him every 3-4 hours to eat, even though he was gaining just fine. As soon as I started that, there was no going back. He still slept a lot day and night for the first month or so but never for more than 2-3 hours at a time until 18 mos when suddenly he started sleeping through the night without us doing anything. Now I miss those night time cuddles!

fwiw, my DD did long stretches of sleep from birth, was back at birth weight at 1 week, and our pediatrician advised that we not interrupt night sleep as long as weight was ok. We didn't have jaundice issues, though, so idk about that. At 3.5 months she is still doing 8-9 hour stretches. Took me a long time (like 2 months!) to get comfortable with it, as she slept so deeply I was worried and would just lie there watching her to make sure she was still breathing.

Daytime sleep, that's another story....

My third kid has been this way. Within two nights, he was sleeping 4hrs at a time and I was waking him because my boobs were exploding. He's now 3 months and sleeps 5-6 hrs (or more, but that's not as frequent) at night in his own bed! He's even a great napper, sleeping 1hr at a time, around 4 times a day, at least and falling asleep in the car.

Thanks for the input. I think that until the jaundice is 100% cleared, I'll keep w/ every 3-4hrs during the night. Once it's cleared and assuming she is gaining well, I will leave well enough alone (within reason). The days she eats a ton all day I find myself less worried about the nighttime stretches. The days she seems to eat lightly during the day, the more inclined I feel to wake her to eat.

While I absolutely don't assume she will sleep like this forever, but I'll bank it while I can!

My son was like this and at a week woke up waaaaaayyy more, he was a 39 week c/s though. For me I think he just wasn't quite ready to be out, but it was necessary for him to be born via c/s due to medical complications from my prior birth. I remember he slept 7 hours one night and I woke him for 2 reasons, he needed to eat and I needed him to eat. His one week WBV he still hadn't gained back his birth weight and I was stressed, but that very day it was like he woke up starving. I was supposed to take him back for a weight check, but I canceled for numerous reasons. He gained his weight back quickly.

He has always STTN though, but he is very wakeful during the day. He's 8 months and the last month he did have sleep issues, but it was his teeth. .

So long as she's gaining well, and the jaundice is clearing up (if you want to wake her for feeds until its gone, I support you! You're the mama, and you know best!), I would enjoy the sleep!! She'll wake up when she's hungry!

DD slept a lot too. I let her sleep through the slight jaundice...I didn't want her to learn to wake up to eat any sooner than she would learn on her own. She is 12 weeks now and sleeps about two 6 hour chunks a night. It. is. heaven.

Both my LO were/are good night sleepers with my first shes was too good not only went 10 plus hours from day one at night but also took 3 hour naps through out the day time as well. She liek never ate and we ended up with FTT issues with her. (turned out to be a blood sugar issue)
Our current was doing 5 horus from birth and now at 3 months goes 10 hours 9-7 she also gives mea great nap every day from 10-1pm and about 30-45 minutes naps around 4 and 7pm.. HOWEVER she nurses every waking moment and is gaining super well.
