Smelly belly button

DD2 is 3 months and I just noticed while bathing her she has a tiny bit of gunk in her bellybutton. So I wiped it with the washcloth and water, and after the bath tried to get the gunk with a Q tip.
I noticed it's smelly, but the freakiest thing was that her bellybutton goes deeper than I realized and there's more gunk there! I don't want to be poking her intestines, I know I wouldn't be (I guess!) but it freaked me out! I guess try and forget about the smelly gunk and leave it?

Do your babies have smelly gunky bellybuttons?

this happened to us just the other week! I freaked out that ds's guts were going to fall out they didn't, he's fine. his belly button is apparently just deeper than I thought. normally it looks shallow and is sort of closed in on itself, but when I was cleaning it with a qtip (there was "lint" that I couldn't get so I went after it with a qtip) it opened up like a bottomless pit.

it was scary for me but didn't bother him.

Belly buttons can get super stinky! As long as there's no open sore, you can dab it with a little lemon juice on a qtip and that will help to clean it and kill the bacteria that is causing the smell.

I know exactly what you mean about not realizing how deep the bellybutton is. Once I got some of the gunk out I saw how deep. It was as if the gunk was keeping her bellybutton glued shut! I use a little olive oil and a q-tip to get it out. She doesn't particularly like it but then it stays gone for awhile before I have to do it again. It's gross but just another one of those things we have to just deal with.
