Potty for 18 month old

I haven't been here in a while, so here's a little refresher. We started EC at 10 months old. We were using the Fisher Price frog potty(it was a baby shower gift). It was a pain because he wouldn't go anywhere in public. I had a Potette that he used occasionally in public, but not often. Well, we visited my mom last week and forgot the frog potty there(which is ok, I'm 13 weeks pregnant, and I haven't been doing so good with the EC because of the horrible morning sickness). But I was thinking this might be a great time to get him going on the big potty, since he doesn't have the option of the smaller potty!

Do you think I should get an insert seat? I have tried the flimsy plastic ones and he doesn't like them--I'm sure it doesn't feel secure. So if I got like a full size padded one with handles? Maybe get a stool too? Any ideas?

Oh yeah, and also, what age can boys be taught to stand to pee? I think he's still a little short for that, and wouldn't understand having to aim lol, but I'm just curious. Daddy has no idea lol and I am a girl, I don't know these things!

We have this potty and it is nice as far as comfort and stability, but that foam part really stinks like pee. Because he tucks his penis under it, but then the pee gets all over it and almost soaks in or something. We rinse it off after every pee and wash it with soap over night. We are going to get a different one. Not sure if that helps or not, but don't get that one! And I plan on having him sit to pee until he is tall enough to stand at the toilet! We'll see how that goes.
