I have an old (from the style of the booklet, 70's? maybe early 80's...) donvier 1 pint (2 c.) hand cranked ice cream maker. I bought it for 3 dollars at a thrift store, and I love it. It's small enough that the freezer part fits well in the freezer all the time, and it's small enough that it makes a reasonable amount of ice cream for two. It's great at making ice cream (with lots of fat, like with 50 % cream 50 % whole milk), only moderate at making sorbet/milk ice cream. (I think if I added more sugar, it would be better at it. It gets a little too icy for the machine sometimes, but I add very little sugar. If you add more fat or sugar or some alcohol, it will have a less icy, more soft texture, and probably work better in the machine. That said, it works fine even for those things, just not brilliant.)
It's actually really easy to make even though it's hand cranked. It takes about 20 minutes, and you only have to turn the handle 1-2 times every 2-3 minutes for ice cream, and every minute or so for sorbet. I'll take it and a book, (or mdc) and crank it absent mindedly, then all of a sudden I have ice cream.
