Okay so I go to a very well known practice in my area that has 3 midwives and two ob's. My only fear going into my first pregnancy/birth was that someone I didn't know would deliver my baby which is initially why I chose their practice. They rotate patients so that on your delivery day you know whoever is on call. Sounds great right? Well on my delivery day the on call midwife from my practice had a "family emergency" When I went in I told everyone I talked to-call my doctors, I want someone I know. well the person filling in for all FIVE of my doctors was someone I had never met or even heard of before. Apparently she is joining their practice. I wanted a calm birth how ever you want type of environment which my practice encourages. This lady had me deliver in the supine position b/c *she said this* she needed to see!!! Then she tried to give me an episiotomy after only 40 minutes of pushing on my first baby and also tried to cath me when i had NO meds! Not to mention I had been up for 40 hours at this point laboring for 22 of those with no rest what so ever. Her bedside manner was so rude, she was on her cell phone for 10 minutes during the delivery! I told her Thank you after delivering and she nodded, I asked her a question and she would give me one word answers and look away, she really didnt seem to give a crap about me or my baby. I have an appointment with my practice for my postpartum visit, how do i tell them how disappointed i am without coming across like a... well you know. I am just worried I will become emotional and irate when I bring it up because I am pissed....

I know the practice that you're talking about, and I am really disappointed to hear what you're saying. If this doctor is joining their practice, I really think that you should speak up. If you're worried about getting too emotional talking about it face to face, I think you should write a strongly worded letter to Dr. Sebestyen outlining what went on during your birth and telling her how dissatisfied you were with the OB who attended your birth. I think she would truly want to know.
Out of curiosity, were the OBs initials SM? Because if it's the one I'm thinking of, I saw her for Gyn care and found her really abrupt, and she was very dismissive of my views on homebirth.

print out what you have written here and read it off if you want- you have boiled it down -why not say it. pretty much you chose them because of the policies that seemed like you would not end up in the very situation you did end up in--

mamajen - yes those are her initials, last name, first name. sm. I actually googled her and checked out her reviews on a few websites and everyone else is saying the same thing I am, dismissive of their views, rushing through everything and that she is c-section happy. She wasn't very happy when I told her I was going natural either, she said "We'll see how that goes but you've been up for a while so..." WOW REALLY?? What encouraging words to a first time mother, but I was determined and knew what I wanted so I didn't let it get to me. My husband said I was in "labor land" after that. just nodding and smiling to all her rudeness. So yes I will write a letter and hand deliver it to her because all of my fluctuating hormones might send me into a rage or who knows with how I've been lately I could just burst into tears. my appointment is tuesday with one of the midwives but I'm sure I'll see her in the back, I always do...

Be sure to make a few copies--ask the receptionist to please put one in the mailbox of each practice member!

That's terrible. I would hate to see such an abrasive and uncooperative doctor added to the only practice in the city that uses midwives. I'm glad you're going to make them all aware of this problem even though, I'm sure, it would be easier to just let it slide.

I'm so sorry - what an awful experience! I would absolutely write a letter and bring several copies with you when you go in for your 6 week appt. Private practice groups get to decide who joins their practice, and if they get a lot of bad feedback about a particular person within the group, it will make a headache for everyone. They are completely funded on insurance reimbursements - literally, each Dr. takes home the $ that they bill for, after paying a fee into the practice group itself to cover overhead expenses. (as one OB friend put it to me, "you eat what you kill").

My point is, you can make an impact. For example, if you say (in your letter) that despite the good care you get from the usual doctors/midwives, you will be switching practices because of your awful experience with Dr. X, and that you will be recommending to your friends that they avoid this practice for their OB care because of the possibility of having Dr. X attend their birth.
