Herbst Appliance

My daughter is to have a Herbst appliance put on this summer. I have read that it is painful and hard to eat. She is 10 and weighs less than 60 lbs. She needs to eat! I also have read about jaw problems after it is removed. Anyone have experience with this? Thanks!

My dd had one put in when she was around that age. Yes, they can be pretty bulky and take some getting used to. Her appliance had bolts at the bottom that protruded out and it made the inside of her lip raw at first. But, as soon as that tissue toughened up it was better, though she did say that it would pinch her lip sometimes. She also said that if she opened her mouth very quickly that the hinges would "lock" up a bit. She never had any issues eating at all, though. Her appliance is off now and she's never had any jaw issues either. Hth!
