Dingos Run in the Sun...Dingo Mamas June Thread! - Page 3

Good morning! Happy June! I'm so excited for the end of DD's school year; it will be nice to have a summer full of nothing stretching out before us.

Ashcav--great race!

Geo--nice race, despite the sock error. What socks do you folks wear, if not cotton? Wool? The very thought of putting anything made of wool on my feet raises goosebumps all over my body; I think I'm allergic to wool. Or maybe no socks at all? A girl on my high-school cross-country team ran with no socks. Her sneakers were the nastiest things I've ever smelled; she had to transport them to school in a sealed plastic bag every day.

Jo--hooray for DH being back again! I hope the finger gets better.

I am totally wrecked here. I picked up another night waiting tables so I'll be able to pay for DS's preschool in the fall. I worked last night and when I got home DD was curled up on the couch near DH, fighting a fever and stomachache. She waited until I got home to throw up. Then she was restless the rest of the night, first up in our bed until I decided it did no good for both DH and I to get no sleep, so DD and I moved down to the couch for the rest of the rolling around, whimpering, kicking, too hot/too cold night. She seems to be better now, thank goodness. It's the absolute worst time for her to be sick, since tomorrow is the dress rehearsal for her ballet show, Thursday is the big field trip to the zoo, and Saturday is the ballet show. Ugh.

So we're spending the day watching TV, which I think is making all of us grouchy. One more show and we'll have to find something else to do the rest of the day. Probably it will involve a trip to the drugstore for more Tylenol, since DD is now whimpering about a hurt ear. Off to google what to try for hurting ears. It's going to be a long day.

L4 - Warm olive oil is supposed to be soothing for ears. I hope she feels better asap.

I'm in for the no-sugar challenge. In the two weeks of birth insanity my eating went to hell in a handbasket and my workouts dropped to nothing. Poof, four pounds up! I'm also due to start my period in the next 2-3 days, so the combination is enough to kill me.

Of course, this morning I had a clear slot to run...and my Garmin isn't charged. How long do you think it needs to hold out for 4 miles?
I can't do no-sugar just now...I feel so weird. Even though I have been running regularly, I feel like I fell off a wagon this past week. Must just be my atrocious eating. Anyway, AF is on her way and things should settle back down. Also, dh is here, so I hope to get in some better workouts with a little more energy. I have been too wiped to challenge myself much.

Got the evil finger lanced. Started the augmentin rx with lunch. Throbbing has already begun to subside, but it's super-tender. Might be able to run OK with it tomorrow, though.

Dh has a lot of work to do. Now that my hand is actually cut open, there's a lot I can't do. Before, it was me against the pain and I could just keep going. Now I have a wound to keep clean. So the weeding is all his for a while, and much of the barn work. He's off the next 3 days, so things might shape up in time for summer vacation.

jo - i hope you get to see someone about your angry finger today-->
keep us posted
Xposted with jo - eeew but glad it's done

mel -i was up all night last night too, but for different reasons. still- i'm a worrier and it often causes me to be up all night, with the brain whirring away. you'll get it all done, i'm sure

geo - nice racin' there, lady. glad you don't have blisters

ashcav - wow you rocked that marathon! nice!

balancin1 - welcome back!

nic - has there been oil on your shores yet? i hope not, what a disaster

gaye - i have a question for you (and any tri mamas here) that i hit you up on twitter about...
this friend has talked me into a 'tri for fun' which is in late august. i am wondering what to wear for the dreaded swim part (i'm scared!) is it like a half-wetsuit thing? even though august is likely to be hot, we're still NORTHern california, which is not reliably warm until september, so i don't think the lake will be all that warm by then. thoughts?

my surgery is scheduled for june 30 and now i'm regretting my decision. i know it's for the best and i would be kicking myself during my next bout of serious pain if i didn't get it done but....i have to take 2-4 weeks off of exercise. i know compared to those healing from broken bones it's not a lot, but it's right in the middle of this learning-how-to-swim thing i'm going to start. actually, i don't know what's worse, the recovery or not being allowed to take ibuprofen for one week before surgery

happy june all!

I ran!

4.5 miles in 45:02, plus the half mile hill hike. I'm probably going to regret it tomorrow, but for now it feels damn good.

Why don't you try swimming in just a regular suit? I bet it will be warm enough by then and it's not like you're doing it in the ocean right? I don't know, wetsuits just seem like they must be a royal pain to get off in transition. And on getting your surgery scheduled, see, maybe it is for the best that this is not our Ragnar summer. It'll be good. Next year we'll kick it.

Memiles - We can do a sugar-free run here next week! Maybe. If you have time. Just keep me posted and I'll make sure I've got a flexible schedule.

Okay, our living room floor is >< this close to being ready to varnish. Another hour or so of scraping off the excess putty and we'll be there. I want to get it done today so the air has 24 hours to vent before the chicks arrive on Thursday.

Jo - I'm glad you've gotten some help for that finger. It sounded totally gnarly and what better excuse for slacking off a wee tad?

La4 - I hope dd is on the mend, that is bad timing for being sick!

Next year, my friend! That's my dream pace too. (Or so I hope. R thinks she's going to run with me next year, so we'll see how that works out.)

Geo--you rock!

Off to finish reading.
oops - wetsuit is not what i meant i meant lycra compression tank and shorts that i could swim / bike / run in without having to change in transition...

http://www.danskin.com/short-6983.html#danskin

like those and a tank top. i guess i wanted to know if that would be a good idea or if the lake is cold, do i need more...? i dunno. totally newbie.
Well, I ran with the running group! It was good, I think. I am slow and really had to work to keep up, but since it's run/walk intervals it is ok. I think it will be good for me to practice being faster. Also, it was kind of warm for me since I usually run in the early morning when it's cold.. but overall, it was ok.

Except the "barefoot hippie" comments from some of the advanced runners. (all runners meet at the YMCA parking lot, then break off into groups)

Nothing too flammable, but one guy in particular talking about how he'd like to try running barefoot but he didn't think he could grow a huge beard and quit cutting his hair... Dork.

I'll admit, I was kind of out of place feeling. I wore capris and a tank, covering the majority of my hairiness.. I wonder if I should wear my new skirt next week? LOL

Ok, gotta go. Red wine (no sub for beer, Bec!) and homemade super healthy whole wheat bread are calling my name. I deserve it for a fast 3 miles, right?
Gaye - fantastic PR yesterday!

jo - I'm relieved that you got your finger taken care of. I was starting to worry about it.

nemesis - hey, I'd take barefoot hippie as a compliment! That guy sounds lame-o and best ignored. I'm not sure what beards and long hair have to do with running? He's not even a little bit funny.

rr: I ran! 2.5 miles! My sinuses are still all clogged up so even though it was extra slow I sounded like I was running a 5k, but it still felt really good to run again. I could tell I haven't run much lately because I was getting that itchy skin feeling like when I just started out. Now if I could just unclog these sinuses. Maybe I can gather up the courage to try the neti pot.
LAx4 - for running, synthetic socks or a naturally wicking fiber like wool (the smart wool running socks feel nice to me, and soft - but wool doesn't bug me any where) The wicking fibers really make a difference, cotton gets wet and bunches up and rubs and promotes blisters. I love natural fibers, but for running I like my technical fabrics!

Nemesis - yes, you deserve it!

poppy -emailed you!

1jooj - I'm glad you got your finger taken care of! If you get the start of something similar in the future, I have good luck with epsom salt soaks twice a day, and if any blister/fluid collection develops, picking the skin off to open it. I just treated little dd's finger this way and we managed to avoid antibioitics or minor surgery.

memiles - I know it's too late now, but I've found that a 30 min charge gets me an hour or more of garmin time. I did that this morning, too - I put it on the charger while I was folding laundry and getting ready to go, and even though it said low battery when I turned it on, it made it the whole hour. While you were being buried in babies, I have been on quite a lull. Have 2 mamas due this week, though, so it'll be over soon.

RR - I had 2 runs today! I didn't have patients in the hospital, so I decided to run this am. I did 4.75, on a nice hilly route, then showered and headed to work. This evening, I went out for 2 miles with Justin (run/walk) So at least June started off well!

Has anyone ever used Hal Higdon's Training Peaks programs? They are the same as his free programs I guess, but you get daily emails about what to run, and can ask questions directly on his forums. I'm going to train for the Chicago Half Marathon, I think, and feel like the extra attention might be motivating.
Hmmm...might I actually be able to stick around this month?

I'm running, I seem to do great one week, low the next, great the next, etc. Last week I ran 4, 6, 4, 14, 8, and 5 (T, W, F, S, S, M) for 36 miles. I think I hit 88 miles for 3 weeks.

Dh's car died on me tonight. Leaving me stranded at work. No dh answering his phone. I had to call around until I could find a friend whose husband came and picked me up. I finally got home 2 hours after normal. Dh finally noticed when I was an hour and a half late. He *thought* I went grocery shopping. Yeah. I'm going grocery shopping at 8pm after a full day of clients. It was all I could do not to cry in my friend's husbands car. I was so upset, angry, frustrated. Oh and this was after locking my keys in my office and that taking 30 minutes to break in to retrieve them. Wonder what tomorrow holds?

Geo~Great race yesterday!!!

ash~Love the race report!

nic~Hooray for getting a Garmin!

drjen~Can you add the Highlands Ranch Splash Mash Dash Tri on August 21? And my PR for yesterday's race?

balancin~

jo~Hope your finger heals quickly!

poppy~Like I said on Twitter, I'm not a big fan of the one-piece tri suit. I think they're kind of ugly and hard to manage if you need to hit the port-o-potty. Just my .02 as I do have plenty of friends that wear and like them. The ones that do, though, seem to do because they're basically full-body spanx and they think they look better than they would in a two-piece set (which I think is debatable, but YMMV). I wear a tri tank and tri shorts. I have Danskin and Sugoi tanks and Danskin, Zoot, Pearl Izumi, and Skirtsports shorts, and have been happy with all of them, for the most part. The Danskin tank was probably my favorite, but it was the first one I owned and when I lost a little more weight, it just didn't fit well anymore. As far as wetsuits, I might email the race director and see what the expected water temperature in and what most people do. I really like wearing a wetsuit. Yeah, it's a bit of a hassle in transition, but it helps with swimming A LOT. It really makes you faster and helps with flotation, which can be huge when you're not used to open water swimming. HTH.

I am sooooo far behind, on both the internet and life in general. Sigh. With no break in sight. I have stuff scheduled pretty much every day for the rest of my life, or at least it feels that way! We had two appointments today, I have orientation all day tomorrow, two appointments on Thursday, one appointment on Friday. And I need to fit in workouts somewhere in there, too. I need to get blog posts done, finish HIPAA and OSHA compliance training for school, read about 8 chapters for class next week (seriously? 6 chapters of reading for the first week of the one class?), etc, etc, etc.

Splitting off my race report, because (as usual) it's waaaaay too long...
rr~Ok, let's see what I can remember since I didn't get around to it last night! I was really nervous getting ready for this race since I hadn't raced since February...it was like I'd forgotten how to get ready! I took the bus up and was at the start a good hour before my wave started (the race starts in waves, since there are 50,000+ runners...first wave went at 7, the last went around 10!). I wandered over to the port-o-potties before the lines got long and took care of business so I could go about pinning myself into my Brooks ID uniform. As I was sitting on the curb, my friend Lindsay found me (her: You weren't kidding about how bright that thing is! me: I TOLD you! ) and helped me pin the back part. We chatted as I finished getting ready and then she went to warm up a bit and I went to go check my bag. Where the line was already TWO BLOCKS long. At 6:50! Unbelievable. I mean, the lines are always long, but this was ridiculous. Every one of my friends that checked a bag either barely made their wave, or missed it and had to run with a later wave. Luckily, I ran into two of my friends who were in line and let me cut in with them. (Them: BRIGHT Me: I KNOW ) As we were standing there, my friend Shannon and her friend found me...guess how? I find it hilarious that in past years, I've been in the same wave as friends and not been able to find them, but this year, almost everybody I knew who was running found me! ID uni, FTW!

I got my bag checked, finally, and we jogged up to the start line. So much for my planned 5-10 minute warm-up jog. Oh well. I slid into my wave with about 3 minutes to spare. Next thing I knew, we were off! My "goal" was to run 9 minute pace, but not having raced since February, I honestly had no idea how realistic that was. I really would have been happy with 9:30 pace. My goal was to go out at or close to my goal pace, since I've learned the past two years that if I go out easy and try to drop, it's probably not going to happen! The first couple of miles were tough, my legs felt heavy and like they didn't really want to go, but I was still right around 9:10 pace. Mile 1 brought us the Blues Brothers, belly dancers, and Elvis. The first bacon sighting was at mile 2 (with additional sightings at miles 4 and 5). Mile 3 brought us beer and doughnuts, a slip n' slide, and a pretty good uphill. My legs were starting to loosen up and feeling pretty good by this point. For the rest of the race, it felt like my speed was limited more by my cardio than by my legs. Somewhere in mile 4, the spectators were handing out Doritos. That one really cracked me up...They had trays with doritos spaced so that it was easy to grab just one. I the Bolder Boulder! The last two miles hurt pretty bad, but yet I had my fastest pace of the race. The last mile is uphill and sucks, but there's something SO special about surviving the last brutal uphill into the stadium and coming in to all those people cheering. I was so psyched to see my time under 57 minutes! I've never been that wiped out at the end of a race, so I'm pretty confident that I gave it just about everything I had yesterday. I headed a little bit up toward the fieldhouse (where they collect the timing tags and you get your snack bag and beer and stuff) and waited for my friend Shannon and her friend, who started in the wave behind me.

The only real bummer of the day was that I couldn't get anyone to go get breakfast with me after the race! All my friends were either heading home right away, in later waves, or just not interested. Oh well. I did a walk through the expo, hung out with one friend for a little while, and then met up with some new friends from Twitter. I'd never met them before, but they turned out to be really, really cool, and I think I'll probably meet up to run with the one girl sometime soon. The Memorial Day ceremonies were, as always, phenomenal. The pro race was incredible. They do a team format with each country having three runners for their team. The mens race was won by Ethiopia, all three runners came into the stadium together HOLDING HANDS THREE ACROSS. And STAYED that way all the way through the stadium and across the finish line! I've never seen anything like it, it was incredible. They did give them official places and stuff, but they all said that they were sharing the prize money equally. How cool is that?! Almost as cool was the fact that Team Colorado (who is kinda the JV team for Team USA for this race) got second, placing all three runners in the top 10! The women's finish wasn't quite as impressive but it was really freaking fast. The first mile was 4:55! I think the winner's time was 31:06 or something ridiculous like that. The men's winning time was 29ish!

Overall, another great day at the Bolder Boulder. I really this race. I mean, come on...50,000+ racers, a stadium full of people cheering for running, of all things, awesome elite racing...it just doesn't get much better! One of the Twitter friends I met flew in from San Antonio just to do the race and loved it so much, she may make it a regular occurrence.

Real, I can't wait to hopefully run with you next year!!! We'll get that sub-9 pace yet! Make your DH run with R and we'll meet them after breakfast.

Ok, I've GOT to get my crap together. I have to be on campus to get my ID badge made before orientation starts in the morning. Here's hoping that it's not nearly as boring as I'm thinking it might be.
Gaye, what a fantastic RR! Congratulations - you did a great job.

BBM - I hate those days. Tomorrow's gotta be better.

I'm struggling to put my online course together (yesterday's fun: all the changes I've made are gone! Oh, wait, no, it's ok. Today's fun: I can't get on that part of the site! Hope they fix *that* before I try to teach a damn online course! Sigh.)

Planning to run after I take the kids to school, as it's my only chance for the next few days to run outside - dh is out of town. We had a hell of a storm last night and part of our fence blew down, so it should be cool and not so muggy, but I've got the homeowner's insurance guy to call today now. At least there wasn't serious damage to the house, or something.
Goodness, I feel far behind...

Gaye ~ great race report! See, Brooks is really making themselves "visible" with your uniform ! Good luck with the first day of school.

poppy ~ I wear tri shorts (love the Pearl Izumi ones) and a tri top for swim/bike/run. For a super-sprint, I think a wetsuit would be more trouble than it's worth. I've only worn one once, and it was Olympic distance.

I swam 2500m yesterday morning and plan another 2500 or so this morning. I was supposed to go open-water swimming tonight, but DH was not down with me being out 3 evenings in a row (which I totally understand ), so the pool it is. And it's the first day of summer vacation, so my two oldest will NOT be thrilled when I tell them we're spending the morning at the Y.

So, who is in on the sugar-free? I'm starting today (but I'm allowing the vanilla greek yogurt I stocked up on yesterday until I run out ).
JG, I'm in on sugar free! (Wine doesn't count, right?)

BBM- yuck. I hope today is much better.
Exhale.

DD is in gifted 5th grade math for next year. Go DD!

Whew.

Thanks ya'll for the support. Bec, I found myself using your words over and over again. Thanks.
Geo - That's terrific mama! You did it!

I am officially a lifeguard now. It's definitely a little daunting to realize I'm now not just an innocent bystander anymore but required to act in case of emergency. Nobody do anything crazy.

Okay, today I'm varnishing, changing kitty litter and giving blood. I used to give blood every time the waiting period was over because the Providence Red Cross has a great blood bank but here they only do it on Wednesdays now and then and I've never gone because I thought it would make me too woozy for taekwondo, today I'll test that theory. Hold me to it ladies.

I gather it's National Running Day, I'll have to take a rain check on that I think, tomorrow.
