Flip system vs. prefolds+SWW?

I'm trying to understand whether the Flip system actually buys me anything over PFs+SWW. I have two SWW covers in medium and I need to buy a couple more - are Flips a better choice?

They make disposable inserts, I think - are they any "better" than a disposable diaper? We use a sposie every second night or so, and when traveling if I think I may not be able to change DS easily.

And.. I'm still trying, since I haven't made it to a diaper shop, to find out how tight the leg opening is on the Flip cover. Is there a gusset, like on Super Brights and Thirsties? Or is the leg opening more like a BG or FB? Gussets really irritate DS's legs and I avoid them...

Thanks!

What I like about the flip covers (with snappied prefolds -- I haven't tried any of the flip inserts) is that they have exposed PUL). The fit is pretty similar to a bummis SWW. On the smallest snap setting it is like a small BSWW -- so you might be able to use it earlier and longer than a medium bsww if you have future kids, but it probably doesn't matter one way of the other if your little one is ready for medium bsww. There are no gussets. The bummis sometimes get kind of wet from a very wet diaper, so they might need airing out to dry (and sometimes I need to throw them in the wash when they get wet like that, because the polyester holds onto the pee and smells). The exposed PUL doesn't get wet like that, so I think it pretty much only needs washing if poop leaks onto it.

I also like the bright solid colors more than the bummis prints, especially for a boy. I think they'll be cute with just a t-shirt during the summer.

We use Flip and it works great during the day. We had a problem with urine streaming out his leg hole one night and I haven't used them since, but he also sleeps on his side sometimes.

I do find they are a pain to use with an active 10 month old and am consequently getting more BG's so that I can use those during the mid day when he's the most active, then I'll use Flip in the mornings and early afternoon (possibly) when he's easier to keep still.

We use the stay dry version and it's so trim! It also seems to fit for quite awhile. At 10 months my son is still on the middle rise.

One thing about the Flip cover that I love is that it's soft, stretchy, and thin. I had a few BSWW early on and they are stiffer, bulkier.

If your baby is already in mediums, I say stick with Bummis if that's what you like. Those fit for a very long time. I haven't tried the Flip disposable inserts so I can't comment on those.

honestly, i dont see why everyone loves flips so much. i mean, they're fine, but sort of just another cover to me. they are good for trifolding, and we have one and its pretty trim to trifold in, but the snaps are a pain on my wiggly girl. i can do snaps on pockets when i dont have to worry about a trifolded pf or insert sliding around. if you like bummis and they work for you, i'd stick with those- unless you are looking to try something new of course. the upside of flips is that they are stretchy and i think the one we have will fit our dd for a long time. shes 14 mos and chubby and still fits on the medium rise.
