Do you use a gas grill?

And if so, what are the grates made out of?

DH likes to grill (I don't, but will once in a while) and our old hand me down grill literally fell apart. He picked out a new one on Memorial Day sale, but the grates are porcelain coated cast iron. They seem like they would be a lot of maintenance - no scraping (dh is a scraper... no need to wash the grates, just scrape them off as hard as you can the next time you want to use it ), no scratching w/metal utensils, chipping, peeling of porcelain, and then if chipped or scratched they can rust, etc.... I wanted stainless grates as I think they could take dh's beating and hold up better, but they didn't come on this model.

Can you share what type of grates you have and how they've held up.

TIA!
And happy grilling!

We had a gas grill for several years (5, to be exact) and I never liked the food that came off if it. DH is the griller in the family and food was never done right. Then the grill continuously had connector cable problems, so we would go to grill and never know if it was going to work. The gas for these grills is expensive too, and we were always running out during grilling because we didn't know how much gas was left.

So, when the grill finally broke for good we bought a Weber. Best decision we ever made. Food tastes better, if you are going to grill , don't you want some if the smoky taste? I know you weren't asking about gas va charcoal, but I thought I would put in my two cents. And yes, definitely go for stainless grates.

We have this one: Webber gas grill. We've been very happy with it so far, I think this is the second or third summer that we've had it.

We have the enameled cast iron grates and I love them (if it's not weird to love something like that...). They heat up very nicely and are quite solid. I rarely have issues with things sticking. I occasionally lift the lids of grills when at home stores and the lightweight grates just feel so flimsy. I do not scrape the grate aggressively but we've had our grill for six years and have no problems with rust. It lives on a covered grilling porch and we have a cover for it that we use in the winter.

I think ours are heavy stainless steel, some solid metal like that. Could be cast iron? We scrape it and scrub with a wire brush and everything...it's kind of hard to clean but holds up fine. I love our gas grill, it's a high end Charmglow thing but we got it used for $100. We've used it for a year and a half so far, the previous owner had it a while too. Only problem with it is one of the sections takes a couple tries with the ignitor to light.
