UTI in 2 year old DS?

My parents have DS (2 1/2 yo) for the weekend. He is just about PLed, but definitely still enjoys the novelty of going potty, esp in different places.

My mom called and asked if he normally goes every 15 min. Um, no... but maybe it's just fun for him there. Today she said he's saying his penis itches and so does his bottom. He's still peeing frequently. I had told her to give him lots of water to drink, so that could be why he's peeing so much, but if he's saying it's itchy....

Also, he sleeps in diapers. They use disposables up there. We use cloth. He's never had an issue with the sposies they use before, but it's been awhile since he used them. Not sure if this is significant in any way, but I thought I'd throw that in just in case.

I'm guessing UTI. Any other suggestions as to what it could be? And what I should do?

I would go get him and check it out yourself. If your parents are anything like mine, they exaggerate everything and what could be nothing quickly turns into something!

I would suspect the disposable diapers before a UTI. UTIs in baby boys are really uncommon, according to some studies I've read (in defense against circumcision ). A lot of the new disposable diapers have recently changed their formula (like Pampers DryMax, as one example) to make them thinner and more absorbent, but at the same time they are more chemically. (The same is being done with pads and I now have a horrific rash all over from the new Kotex U, which are using a baby diaper-like formula now).

Can you parents use cloth diapers on him?

If your ds is intact I would be making sure they know to leave the foreskin alone. since that can cause major problems if they are messing with it.

The itching both penis and bumm points to diaper rash or yeast to me actually. Intact or not.

He's intact, and actually was fiddling quite a bit last week before he went to them, so maybe it got irritated by all the playing? He's pretty rough on it. They do know not to mess with it (I think, I should probably remind them) but he's been yanking on it so much that maybe he hurt something.

Itchy butt -- I think he's a little sensitive to the TP. We use wet wipes on him, and I told them they may want to do that while he's there, but saw no evidence of wipes in the bathroom, so if he pooped several times a day like he does here, that could be why he has the itchies there.

I guess I'll watch him tonight and see what's up. If we suspect UTI, should I be trying to get a sample from him, or do they swab to test for that?

UTI test is peeing in a cup a swab is to check for an infection of the penis/foreskin itself.

Itchy penis can be an indication of separation starting to happen especially if he is messing with it a lot. But it could also be yeast. Does he have any sort of rash on bumm or penis?

Thank you! No rash, but I put some cream on anyway before bed tonight. I'll go and read that thread now -- I really hope it's just separation, but no one else in the family is intact, so no one thinks this way as the first possibility.
