"milks" for 1 year old

Hi,

My LO just turned 1. I'd like to introduce some "milks" to him though I'm not comfortable with animal milks or soy milk. I'm overwhelmed by all the other choices at the health food store though. Hemp milk looks good but is Hemp seed a nut/legume? Also, what about coconut milk kefir?? Oat milk? Also, anyone know if those long-shelf-life packages contain BPA?

Thanks!

My son has always loved almond milk!

I love almond milk, but if you're staying away from nuts then I'd recommend oat milk. It tastes very pleasant. . .unlike Hemp milk which IMO is undrinkable. I think a LO would like the taste of oat milk. Its the first non-mama milk that I would try myself for my guy.

Coconut milk kefir sounds great though!

I did soy milk supplemented with flax oil to add some fat.

You could try almond/rice doing the same. It might cut down some protein that way so be sure to adjust for that. If you are still nursing(just guessing since you are avoiding both cow and soy milk) I'm sure it will all balance out.

Thanks, everyone. We are avoiding nut milks b/c my LO had two bad reactions to peas a few months ago so we've been avoiding all legumes/nuts ever since. Soy is out b/c it's adversely affected my thyroid and I don't want to risk trying it with LO. (It's also a legume but he's had bits of tofu unintentionally and no reaction so I'm not as worried about an allergy/intolerance there.)

Yesterday I gave him some "So Delicious" coconut milk and he liked it. I think we'll also try oat milk down the line.

Thanks, again!

I think I'm going to try the multi-grain milk that Trader Joes has. I thought it was Pacific Brand, but I don't see it on their website. We tried some awhile ago and it was rather tasty.

My kids really like Almond milk and the new coconut milk.

None of us has nut allergies, but I still worry about them.

Introducing alternative milks so early can lead to early weaning. At 1 yo the only milk a baby needs is human.
