My new mindset

Thread Starter
So I've been on the declutter wagon for a little more than a month now. I've done pretty good, though did have a few set backs ( yardsales, thrift).
We are trying to focus on our bigger plan of eventually moving someday.....across the country....to be closer to family. I have to say I have learned so much already, that family is much more important than the stuff I "can" have or do have. Less is more.

Anyway, so as I go room by room I trying to think: If we were moving right now, what would I want to keep? What could I easily let go of? Would I want to pay for it to travel across the country?

Then, when it comes time to put the house on the market, it won't be this HUGE looming project. A little paint and small fix ups and thats it. At least that's what I'm striving for!

Such a healthy mindset! I will be borrowing your strategy as I try to declutter my own home.

I need to look at it this way too. We're talking about either adding on bedrooms and a bathroom to this house, or just selling it and buying a bigger one that is better suited for our family (the kids all share a huge bedroom and we only have one bathroom right now). So it is a very real possibility to us that we'll be moving again in a few years (I really hate moving, did it 2yrs ago and it stunk) so I should be approaching my own decluttering this way. Thanks for posting this!

I am doing this as we need to move from our roommate situation. I joined the declutter challenge and IMO 'everything' can just go. But then I need to stop and remind myself, there is a roommate here and I cant junk her stuff LOL...

We are doing the same thing! We are not moving, but will be taking a 6-8 month sabbatical and friends will be living in our house while we are gone. I have been going through each room purging anything and everything that I don't want to pack up.

We will need to pack all of our personal things in the attic, so suddenly I have this new outlook on everything in my house. Is this thing needed? Lovely? Worth cleaning, packing, hauling 2 flights to the attic, only to be stored and then unpacked and hauled back downstairs?

I have donated mountains of things -- things I like, but have no need for -- things that are beautiful, but not my taste -- things that we collected to remember a time/place/moment -- it boggles my mind how much stuff we have when I thought we were such minimalists.

I am stuck on my dishes. They are clearly needed right now, but I hate them. My MIL gave them to us when she bought herself a new set and I just don't like them. I think I might drop the whole set off at Goodwill when we leave town and buy something new when we get back. The thought of lugging them to the attic only to haul them back down gives me the shivers.

I LOVE your mindset...I need to think of it in those terms rather than "what can I get rid of?" Now if only I could convince my DH of this, tee hee!
