"My toast, mommy toast. Mommy's car, daddy's car" etc

My 27 month old is always always labelling things and it's important for her to know who owns what. In the morning "Mommy's coffee, my juice. Mommy's banana, my banana". My husband thinks this is a very odd quirk - is it, or is it just a standard phase ? And if so, please do tell me it doesn't last too long! I'm not particularly worried about it. But it does basically seem to be a road to focusing on what is "mine mine mine".

DS does that too. DH and I were talking that 2 1/2 year olds can be some of the most possessive people on earth. He's very into identifying what's his and what's other people's. But he's also committed to making sure that everyone has some of whatever he has. So if he has string cheese and DH doesn't, he INSISTS that DH have a piece so everyone "have cheese." I think it's from developing a sense of self identity as separate from other people. I don't think it's anything to worry about.

How cute! My DD is starting to do this a little bit, but your quotes remind me of a book we have called "My World" by Margaret Wise Brown, author of "Goodnight Moon." The text goes, for example "My car, Daddy's car. My comb, Mother's comb. My fish, Daddy's fish." And on and on and on for the whole book (with illustrations of course). I expect the text was inspired by normal toddler development My DD loves the book and I bet your DD would, too, but I don't know if you want to encourage her possessiveness

DD started doing this at 18 months right when she started putting two words together. She was really crazy about it for awhile there, but it has now tapered off.

She still gets a kick out of telling us whose shampoo and soap is whose.

This is not one of the more common phases, but I do remember reading about it somewhere.

DS does this all the time. He loves identifying who goes with what. I don't worry too much about it leading to a "mine, mine, mine" mentality. DS loves to share and likes to switch things up a bit - "Mommy eat DS's toast," "DS drink mommy's smoothie," etc.

DS does this all the time as well. Started doing it around 18 months or so.. maybe sooner.... I never thought of it as bad or weird.

Must be standard. DD's 21 months today and we've had about 3 weeks of "mama's car," "grandma's car," "my car," etc.

This weekend we hit fever pitch with the Mine-Mine-Mine's. Driving me a little batty. I'm sure it was exasperated by having to share toys with her little cousin, but still!

Pretty normal around here. I think the whole 'mine' thing is a different stage though. DS did not say 'mine' at all, until he played with a little boy last week who said it nonstop. Now everything around here is "MINE!".

Our 19 month old goes through a little routine that goes something like "Mama toast, Daddy toast, DD toast!" followed by parceling out little bits and saying "Mama have, Daddy have, DD have!"

This can cause trouble when the object in question is a full cup of coffee.

My son is 1.5 and he's been obsessed with what belongs to whom for a while, mainly about whose bottle of water / drink belongs to whom, but also keys, cars, shoes, socks, etc. In particular, he's very protective of my stuff and doesn't want daddy to touch any of it. Strange little creatures.

I think it's pretty normal too, caden though he doesn't talk much yet if for example he takes a toy off his sister i'll say thats caitlin's toy can you give her it back and he will shake his head and point to himself and say my.

Yup, we have that here, too. And DS just spent the weekend with his grandparents, who worked on teaching him to say "mine" and "yours" instead of "<name>'s"...

My DD does this.

Whenever she sees beer bottles she says, "daddy's wa-wa". He only drinks one once or twice a week, so this cracks me up.

My daughter is also 27 months and does this a lot.

My favorite is how she says things are "yours" and "mines."

AND...she has "Mines boobie" and "mommy's boobie" while she's nursing. She's not allowed to twiddle the nipple on the other boob while she's nursing, so that one is mommy's!

My 26 month old has been stuck on this for a while now too. I don't necessarily think it's a bad case of 'mine-itis' though. I think she is really working on learning and understanding the order of things. She likes to categorize things, or tell us what things are and get's kind of annoyed/upset if you tell her a cat is a dog when she knows a dog is a dog iykwim. She just is learning about how the world around her functions. That's how I see it.
