What to use for laundry detergent?

I have young kids and our clothes are always getting extremely dirty, theirs and mine. Mine always get food stains. I have been trying out different 'natural' laundry detergents but have not liked any: Charlie, country save, planet, acouple of the diaper company ones. I had to go to Tide + Calgon for the diapers because they were stinky, but I have still been using more natural stuff for our clothes.

What natural products can I use? I need a detergent and a stain treater. I have hard water and a front loader that isn't so great.

Are you a Costco member? They have an eco-friendly laundry detergent that is wonderful. It smells great (I think a lot of the natural ones stink, IMO), cleans fabulously, & is budget friendly, etc. I do you stain spray (spray n wash), as I've not found anything "natural" that works for stains.

You might try dishsoap on the food stains. We use both Ecover and Seventh Generation dishsoap - so even the more natural brands work on clothing.

Another plug for dishsoap (small amounts!) on stains!

You can make your own! I use this recipe and it works really well. She's got other recipes on her site too and is very nice if you have any questions- I asked her about adding essential oils into it.

I forgot to say, if you aren't into making your own laundry detergent, I second Costco's! Their dish washing detergent is awesome as well.
