My Co-Sleep-ling

What to do when co-sleeping isn’t working anymore?

My LO is 10 months old, and up until this point, we’ve blissfully co-slept. But, about a week ago she started tossing and turning, flailing and kicking, scratching and pinching ALL NIGHT LONG. And, ALSO, she’s now up frequently during the night and waking super early in the morning (between 5:00-5:30 am, if not earlier) and crawling all over the bed. It’s not a good scenario.

I have two almost-three-year-olds also, so I need to be at least partially rested to keep up with them during the day (oh, they recently “gave-up” naps too…!). I’m feeling a bit desperate at this point, and I’m open to any/all suggestions.

Thanks in advance, Melissa

Is your 10-month-old starting to crawl or going through some other big motor development milestone? My DD spent about 2-3 weeks sleep-crawling at around 8 months old. It was a passing stage, and co-sleeping "worked" for us again soon after. You might also just need more space now, like a side-car or single mattress on the floor for the little one, to ease her away from co-sleeping so closely.

Can you get the almost-3-year-olds to have "quiet time" in the afternoon? Sometimes, when I'm really tired and my 2 1/2 year old won't nap, I just lie down and close my eyes and let her muck around in the room there with me.

I am in the same situation with my 9 month old. I feel like I am picking my daughter up all night long and moving her back to the top of the bed. She likes to crawl in her sleep, kicking and throwing her arms everywhere. I am so bruised and scratched from her as well. I try putting her in the crib but I find that I am more tired from numerous trips back and forth all night. I was worried that she was going to fall off the bed in the middle of the night if for some reason I didn't wake up so I threw out my boxspring. I love cosleeping but I wish she would sleep in her crib some nights so I can catch up on sleep lol.
