This is so disturbing....it makes my insides churn at the idea of a toddler smoking. http://www.thestar.com/entertainment...eeks-help?bn=1

disturbing.

however, just to make the discussion interesting, the article says smoking is so much a part of that culture that any hazardous effects are voluntarily negated. maybe for that culture not cosleeping is as as toddler smoking is here? i could totally imagine a culture that thinks separating a newborn baby from its mother (to sleep in another room) is equally unthinkable.

That article seems to have a different view than others I have read:

In fact, his parents say Rizal throws a tantrum when they refuse to give him a cigarette. His father gave him his first smoke when he was just 18 months old.

I don't think this is quite a fair comparrison. Family bed-sharing is actually fairly ubiquitous in the US (when you ask about kids who are ever allowed in the bed versus "do you co-sleep") but both articles mentioned that in that country only 3.2% of children 3-15 are active smokers. Given that this child is even younger, and smokes so much, it seems pretty rare even there.

ETA: The country's Child Protection dept is also looking into the case, so it can't be considered totally okay.

That has got to be the craziest thing I have EVER seen. What kind of squirrely ass parents does this kid have? Just too bizarre.

It's really not that uncommon for kids in some parts of the world to smoke or chew some form of tobacco, even from a very early age.

I gotta laugh though, the parents complain about the expense...he is 2! Not like he is stealing money and joyriding to the store to buy his own cigs. They are afraid of the tantrum he will throw otherwise? Good grief...

Let's be careful about generalizations and namecalling. The case is horrible, and very wrong, but does not represent everyone.
