Seltzer maker?

Does anyone have one? I was kind of toying the idea of getting one for my Dad for father's day. When we have seltzer, he drinks it, but we're often out. I'm thinking of Sodastream. http://www.sodastreamusa.com/where_to_buy.aspx There are a lot of retailers around me that I could get the refills from. Wondering what others experiences are with any brand. I'm thinking of cost, environment & convenience...

We had one when we lived in Germany. They've been popular in Europe for many years. I wasn't impressed. I prefer natural fizzy water. We can get it fairly cheaply at Costco (San Pellegrino) by the case. The Co2 canisters can get expensive. Probably more so in the US.

Subbing.

We're interested in one, too. I love sparkly water, and am bothered by the carbon impact of shipping water around the world. Kind of a bummer to hear that it doesn't taste as good, but I'll probably make the switch anyway.

I used to have one for years in Germany, and also bought one when I moved to the US. I really liked it

Unfortunately, the retailer for the refill bottles (the only one in my state) stopped carrying them, and since they don't ship well () I couldn't get the refills anymore and had to get rid of the soda maker. If I lived in a different state, I'd still be using it

We have one. It's the soda stream. My dh loves seltzer, and he averages about a liter a day. He transitioned from cokes to flavored seltzer (never drank natural fizzy water), so that's what he likes. This is MUCH better for the environment (think of it--he was drinking a liter a day in a plastic bottle), and MUCH cheaper for our pocketbook.

We have to get refills for the CO2 canisters about twice a year. We order 2-3 large size canisters at that time (I can't remember exactly). It costs us about $60. That's our only real cost for the seltzer, so that works out to about $10/month. Before this, the cheapest seltzer I could find that dh liked (that came in 1 L bottles--he doesn't like the 2L bottles) cost about $0.89/liter. That was costing us about $27/month. So, for us, a big cost savings.

I mostly drink the seltzer as a mixer--making spritzers with half juice, for instance.
