i can crochet, is it possible to crochet them? knitting needles always freaked me out
post #42 of 55
Yes you can totally crochet them!

Are you on ravelry? I'll do a quick search on there for you. Be sure to use 100% wool, and dont buy superwash, it wont hold the lanolin. I've been using Cascade 220, and these soakers are like fortresses for pee.

nifty, I will need to give them a try! thanks!

I wish we had a local CD store. the stores here only have Gerber ones, which I have to double really for decent absorbency, or have them all embroidered and stuff for use as burp cloths.

We dont really have anything here either. A few stores sell BumGenius, but thats it. I've ordered everything online except for my wool. We use Little Lions prefolds, and they have been awesome. At night, I do an angel fold with a microfiber insert and the soaker, never ever have had a leak.

I really think more people here would use cloth if they knew there were so many options besides gerber and plastic pant covers! Once I get a decent stash of soakers knitted up, I'm planning on taking them around to a few local shops here, or maybe to our farmers market. There is a local store here that sells handmade things on consignment, and they have a TON of handknit and crocheted baby things, but not one thing to use for diapering!

Medela makes pump and store storage bags. It's basically just a regular bag with a plastic loop to hook onto the horns. I've pumped into them during emergencies and it works well. I keep a set in my pump bag for those inevitable times I forget the bottles on the kitchen counter.

CD - what do you ladies use at night? We use BG 3.0 and a few fuzzibunz all the time and love them, he just seems to wet through them pretty frequently at night, and that's even double stuffed. I really don't want to resort to using disposables at night.

I cant use my pockets at night, even double stuffed bc DS is a side sleeper and the pee wicks out of the tabs. I did use fleece soakers for a while because I was intimidated by wool. Those things were like tanks too, from Dancing Bears. I love my wool now though

No BG here, although we do have G Diapers. Once I build up my stash I will wean off the sposies at night. Right now I am working off the sampler pack I got from a lovely local online retailer (she delivers to my house, and no shipping charges!) I wish she would get a storefront. So I have a
(as in 1) Bummi's superbrite cover,
2 of their organic prefolds,
1/2 dozen gerbers,
1 Grobaby cover with snap in soaker and
1 or 2 extra pads, which I haven't used yet, b/c I don't know if they are meant as doublers with the soaker, or you would normally use them, and the soaker only for outings or overnight?
1 bottombumper AI2 with a snap in + 2 extra pads

Needless to say, I am doing laundry every day on this. I have ordered 2 Bummi's whisper wraps that come with 4 prefolds each (I believe the retailer says they are indian ones) from eBay, they probably won't be here until the end of next week, at which time I also get paid again, and want to up my stash. I am debating whether to buy a box of Fip system, or go on the FSOT and get some used, that are more varied . . .

On another note, we have put up the co-sleeper and now DS starts the night in his crib, in his nursery. It makes me kind of sad but he is doing well, and still spends a good part of the night with us.

We have a jumperroo thingy and today he was playing on the floor next to it, trying to pull himself up using the poles. It looked like he was pole-dancing! I wish I had got a picture.

How do you like the grobaby? I've been thinking of trying a few. We dont really *need* them, I'm just obsessed with CD, and I like the look of them

DS had THREE teeth pop through last night, and one more that looks like it is going to break through at any second. That will be a total of 6 teeth and two more swollen buds that look like they will be coming soon as well. No wonder he has been so upset this week!!
Wow, what a mouthful of teeth!

I like the growbaby, but I think I like the bottombumpers more, because of the snaps (on the outside) DS likes to play with velcro, I've noticed.

Found the one and only store in our area that sells CD! Swaddlebees and one other sort.

obviously, I want 100% wool, other than that, anything I need to look for materials for the soakers?

I use BG 3.0 at night.

My Zi has 6 teeth all th way in now too.

Those have to be some cute toothy smiles.

My little man has discovered how to pull himself up on his feet now. He started working on it on Thursday and yesterday I went to get him from his nap and he was standing up holding on to his crib and his diaper was off. I think we're going to be in trouble shortly!

I keep losing track of time and losing you guys! I don't get to go to Mothering much these days and when I do I get caught by some other post and forget to come hunt you down. Such is life with two little ones!

Abigail is doing well. She's 7.5 months, trying to organize how to crawl, and a dream.

We figured out two weeks ago that she has a posterior tongue tie so that in itself has been a whole can of worms. Exercises for her mouth, frenotomy coming up this Friday, and I'm pumping like crazy after feeds to try to get my supply BACK up.

I'm exhuasted. Is she in college yet?

Zi has got to be so adorable!! Which ones were the next ones to come in after the front 4?

Just make sure you dont buy Wool that is labled 'superwash'. Its treated so that you can wash it in a machine, but it makes it so the fibers cant hold lanolin, so it'll get soggy and leak.

My favorite so far that I've tried from my local store is Cascade 220. Its a pretty decent price, havent had leak problems, and comes in pretty colors. Its peruvian highland wool, so it isnt the softest though. If you want something super soft, look for merino. Dont buy blends, (Like a merino/silk blend, etc) bc you can get leaking issues with that.

Somone also told me not to use alpaca for the same reason, but I know some people use it anyways. I'm tempted to try some just because there is a pretty hank of it over at the local store, but I'm scared of spending the $ on it bc its not cheap, and have it not work.

One of these days I'm going to order Xavi some of these though, SO pretty!

there are some alpaca wool blends at the store (I was at AC Moore's) and a few different 100% wools, though some of them I did notice were the superwash; if they say handwash only that should be the right sort I think. there is one called all sheep or something that has some gorgeous colors. it is like $6 a skein, which isn't too bad, I think.

Gabe is trying to pull himself up, poor man, but we haven't a whole lot of things for him to practice with.
