His Poor Butt!!!

so my son has never ever had diaper rash. that is until now. now at 16 mo he has had a couple of mild ones, but this last one was SO BAD! i woke up this morning and his poor butt is all blistered - it looks like someone used sandpaper to wipe him.
there has really been no change w/diapers or clothes,
i was thinking, maybe dairy? but he has had yogurt and cheese for months now and it never caused anything like this.
i feel so bad for him, yesterday, he didnt even want to take a bath because the water hurt him
any ideas on where this came from?
what to do with it to help him heal faster? ive been only doing vit a and d and lanoline ointment, and some eucerine ointment for babies, because that seems to help with the redness well.
help me to fix his butt!

Poor baby. My 17 month old also had no rashes to speak of, and I was being all smug about it, until one day, boom, she had a couple of nasty blisters. I blamed the fact that she was in dh's care all day one day, and he often spaces out changing her diaper for quite a while. Some days I come home from work, and if he's been with her all day and not the babysitter, who is very attentive to the diaper changing, her diaper will be sagging almost to her knees and completely soaked. He just doesn't notice. I plastered the California Baby Calendula cream on it for a few days and that did the trick. Also I let her run around without a diaper if we're at home for a few hours. Yesterday I did that and there was a puddle. I can deal with it because we happened to have the rugs rolled up since we just had some work done on our apartment. I tend to use cloth diapers on the weekends when I'm at home with her and use disposables when her dad and the babysitter are with her. I think the all day in a disposable with no change is a bad combo. I don't know about the diet, could be. But the thought of a blistery rash with stingy pee on it--owie!

yeah, i let him run around without the diaper all evening yesterday and he even slept without one - i just piled up some blankets and stuff on the bed. and today he was without a diaper for a part of the day while my mil was babysitting, but the butt is still red red red and has some blister looking things on it. ouch.

Mine gets acid burn butt sometimes. It's horrible. I figured out to just swab oral antacid liquid (Maalox analogue) on it with a cotton ball. Man I wish I'd thought of that a year ago. Neutralizes it right away. And I've tried EVERYTHING to clear those up. This works.

I find that Desitin clears it up pretty quickly. Depending on what my son eats, his poop can cause bad redness especially if it's mushy.

ds2 has several culprits- coconut, nuts and berries. grapes, cherries cause it in quantity.
as a pp stated, Maalox helps but I prefer to try to avoid the triggers. If that's what I see, what's happening that I don't?

Just to clarify, I wasn't suggesting Maalox as an alternative to finding triggers. My son's GI tract seems to be a little immature, so for him at least it's not so much intolerance triggers (apart from dairy, eek) as it is he has trouble digesting some things. That said, probiotics are working WONDERS on that end.
