paws leaving urine trail on woodfloor after using litter tray

So I'm using these boot matts for my small dogs litter tray. They are like rubber matts but have an edge to them so the urine doesn't roll off the sides onto the floor. I put newspaper on them too, to help soak it up, then change the paper when needed.

My problem now is because the urine stays in one place, it can run under the dogs feet so she is standing in it while she finishes. Then she steps out the litter tray straight onto my hardwood floors and leaves paw prints of urine from her feet.

So then I have to go round with a cloth and antibacterial spray cleaning up her paw prints because Im worried germs from her urine will cause us to get sick, or it will make the room smell of dog wee.

Any ideas for how I can help this issue? My only thought is of putting a folded towel beside the litter tray area, so she steps onto that first before the hardwoord floors, and hopefully the urine all gets wiped onto the towel first. What do you think about that? Any other ideas welcome!

I would put something more absorbent in the litter pan. You could use some form of litter- paper litters are popular with dogs. You could also use an absorbent pad- potty pads are popular for that purpose. I suppose you could even use old towels if you do the laundry frequently. I would worry about urine scalding the dogs feet for stepping in it so frequently, even if it gets wiped off by a towel outside the box, its not quite the same as washing it off, you know? I think something with better absorbency INSIDE the box, so she doesn't have to stand in urine in the first place is a better idea.

Just clean with soap and water....urine is sterile unless she has an infection Trust me....the number of urinalyisis I have run through the years while eating my lunch....I would have been sick many times over.

Instead of newspaper you can get pet "wee-pads"....they are very absorbant.

The only thing is those pads get expensive. The newspaper is cheap or free if I get it from other people after they are done with it.

Does anyone use the absorbant dog wee pads? (like the puppy training pads right?) How many times a day do you change them?
