No way in heck would I ever get that.

It "interferes with breastfeeding"...which is one of the most important breast cancer preventive measures a woman can take!

Which, is odd sort of...one of the reasons that the pill is supposed to lower cancer risk is because it tricks the body into thinking it's pregnant. So you'd think that a "breast cancer" vaccine might work by tricking the body into thinking that you're lactating. But evidently that's not what this one does.

Regardless...this is yet another vaccine that I'm most definitely going to take a pass on. Even before the full research is complete! Nope, no thanks, not me!

Yikes, no thanks. And how wonderful that it interferes with breastfeeding, more money for the formula companies and more sick kids to treat for the pharma industry, yeah, what a cashcow! /sarcasm end

Researchers say the vaccine would be targeted at women over the age of 40, because it disrupts breast-feeding
So it won't be offered to women who are breastfeeding or planning on breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding is important in possibly helping to prevent cancer, but it's not foolproof. My aunt breastfed all three of her kids and she's dying of breast cancer right now.

Honestly, I'm sure it won't be long before it's marketed to everyone. Cancer can hit at any age...

Yep, bet it'll be on the kid's list before too long. Look at the Hep B vax!

Has anyone heard how it's supposed to work? Did I miss that in the article?

I watched something about this yesterday. They said the vaccine can also stop cancer breast cancer from progressing.

I personally will not ever get this vaccine (nor would I give it to my daughter) as a preventative measure but I would be willing to get it if I ever was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Toolip, it targets a specific protein that is found in breast cancer cells. It disrupts breastfeeding because that same protein is found in nursing moms (not clear on whether it's actually in the milk, or what.) Because it targets that protein, they're saying it can be used as a preventative and a treatment option.

It's my understanding that 100% of the mice who were given this "vaccine" did not get cancer, and 100% who were not given it did get cancer. Which sounds really impressive until you find out that they only gave it to 6 mice.

A study in mice suggests that a preventive breast cancer vaccine might be possible in humans, scientists say.
Might be possible. It's not a vaccine yet. It's still in study form. And while it does say that women might begin taking part in the next stage of research as soon as next year, do you know how slowly research goes? VERY, VERY slowly. A single paper might represent ten years of work and research of an entire team of people. If findings look encouraging, news is released, but this could still take ages (and it still might not work. Sometimes, even things that start off looking promising end up not working. Mice are not people. They're great as models in research, but they're not 100% exact). So I don't think anyone is in any danger of this popping up on mandatory vaccines for babies any time soon.

I wonder if it will work for women with BRCA1/2, the breast cancer gene. I'm curious. Breast cancer has taken a heavy toll on my life...

The inventor (?) of this vaccine was interviewed on Keith Olbermann the other night. Something he said gave me pause. He was asked how he came up with the idea for this breast cancer vaccine and he actually said that he looked at the "success" of the childhood vaccination program and realized that there were no diseases that people are vaccinated against in mid-life. So people take all these vaccines as kids and then none until they are elderly and he thought, why not create a vaccine for diseases people get later in life.

Perhaps I am being too cynical, but I thought it was very odd for him to say that. It sounded more like he was a drug manufacturer looking for a new mass vaccine to give the population first, rather than the primary goal being to reduce breast cancer or death.

Here is the link to the interview.

Am I the only person bothered by this?

I see this as something that may be helpful for women who have the breast cancer gene. There are women who do genetic testing at age 18 or 20 and have had full double mastectomies by their early 20s in order to hopefully avoid dying from breast cancer. If such a woman could choose (note, choose) to receive a vaccine that would prevent her from ever breastfeeding in lieu of the total double mastectomy - what a great option for her.

I am very wait-and-see on it, and I'm especially skeptical of a vaccine that's going to induce an auto-immune response, but I hope that it can do some good and find a place in the lexicon of breast cancer treatment and/or prevention.
