protecting skin on a 12 mo old crawler?

The tops of my son's feet are very red and chafed (almost looks like rug burn) from crawling on our wood floors, since the tops of his feet drag across the floors. We do have area carpets that he crawls on too. His shins and knees are also red and look calloused, and he has a couple of small bruises on the sides of both of his knees.

Should I be putting him in long pants and socks to crawl or is this just something that goes along with crawling and their skin toughens up?

The only issue with long pants is that we have hot summers and no air conditioning so I thought others might have some suggestions.

i don't remember that happening at all w/ my older son.. does it seem to bother him? the only thing i can think of would be socks and baby legwarmers or pants? he'll let you know if he's too hot!

omg, that sounds awful! I second the recommendation for some Babylegs, ASAP!

Third the babylegs. Also he will eventually learn to pick up his feet when he crawls. But until then you can cover the tops of his feet with babylegs as well.

I put knee pads on my baby.

My mom put a helmet on him too, just in case

I use babylegs too. I cut off kneehighs to make them.

Yep, sounds like you need some Baby Legs. I kept DD in then until she mastered crawling with her legs off the floor. She didn't get the problem your DS has, but she did get a blister on her toe from the way she crawled at first. I guess she changed how she crawled because it healed.

Babylegs made DS1's knees slip and slide on the hardwood floor. It caused him to get very frustrated. But, he wasn't as old as your LO, so maybe a more experienced crawler wouldn't have the same problem.

I've just been keeping socks and thin sweat pants on him and it seems to have solved the problem for now. Hopefully he will walk soon!
