Help me with my wash method

My diapers aren't coming clean. Am I really going to have to do two full cycles in order to get them clean? That seems like a lot of energy and water.

I have a relatively new (1.5 years) top loader w/d set, not HE.

I've been washing on hot with a pre-soak and an extra rinse cycle. I'm using All Free and Clear right now. Baby is EBF, so poops are what you'd expect from that.

My diapers are fitteds, covers, AIOs, and pockets.

At first I thought they were coming out stained, but I ran my thumbnail across a stained area and they are definitely still *dirty*... as in, yellow came off on my fingernail. They're most dirty around the stitching at the seams.

I need a solution that doesn't involve incredibly expensive or hard-to-find soap. And it would be great if I didn't have to wash two whole cycles. DH is cool with CDing, but I think he'd be less cool with it if it ends up costing a lot and taking a lot of effort. And honestly, I'd be less cool with it, too.

So, what am I missing?

The most simple routine that works for me long term is:

dump diapers in
COLD rinse
HOT cycle with a tiny bit of detergent (I use purex free and clear- cheap)
extra HOT rinse with lower water level

Hmmm, I wonder if my extra rinse is cold or hot. I think that my presoak is hot.

Does the order of when you do hot vs cold matter somehow? I don't understand the science of getting CDs clean.

I think the order of hot and cold can matter. Doing the COLD rinse first rinses away the poop and pee without setting stains. The HOT wash will get diapers cleaner than if washing in cold water. And, another HOT rinse will be more effective at getting detergent residue out than a cold rinse.

Yeah, with my old washer I did a cold rinse, hot wash, and another hot rinse and it worked fine. Now with my fancy new HE washer I'm having to do 3 full cycles (cold, hot, warm) to get them clean

Yes, I've found it really matters.

Want to rinse in cold- hot cooks in nasties (eewww.... trust me....)
Wash in hot to make detergent work best, get things clean
regular rinse in cold is fine
EXTRA rinse in hot to get out detergent
