I made a difference!

My SIL had told me she didn't really want to circ my nephew when he was born but that she was going to leave it up to my brother who did want to circ.

I was trying not to be pushy but I did talk to her and give her some ideas as to what she could say that might help him think about the matter more thoroughly as his main reason was that he wanted his son to look like him.

Right before the birth I sent my brother an article (from Mothering! ) on circumcision and just left it at that, praying he would at least read it but I never heard anything from him about it.

At the hospital when we checked in (I was her doula) they asked if she'd be circing and she said yes.

But then my mom called me the day they went home from the hospital and told me that they decided not to after he read the article!

I can't say how happy I am! I feel over the moon!

Thank you Mothering! One more intact little boy!

Awesome job!! And you know, it's not just one baby boy that was spared by your actions. I bet the next time someone brings it up in front of your SIL, she'll have some great advice to give them!

YAY!!!!

congrats to the parents!!! and what a lucky boy!!!

although, I'm dishearten to hear yet another practitioner soliciting an arbitrary surgery when the surgery has the potential to cause death.

no one has ever died from a complete set of male genitals.

for mothering mag for talking some sense to your brother!!!

You know I was really frustrated at one point because when she found out insurance wouldn't pay for it she thought that would be a big reason for him not to... then their OB offered to circ him and just charge an office visit if they wanted to.

I find that quite sad; that a doctor would be willing to defraud an insurance company just to perform an unnecessary surgery on a non-consenting minor. More insurance companies need to be like this one and refuse to pay for circumcision. I know when our health care stopped covering it here, circ rates went down right away.

Super yay to you and mothering mag (and bro & SIL, too)! Congratulations on your new nephew.

Boo to the doctor. What he said is very disturbing to me.
Please remind your family not to retract or let any doctor retract your nephew. It could lead to problems and then they might feel pressured into circ. Mothering has great info on retraction and intact care. Maybe you could invite your SIL to join here.

Thanks! We did talk about not retracting and SIL said her ped is actually very supportive of intact boys and was actually excited to see she'd decided not to circ. She discussed not needing to touch his penis at all and he was cool with that. So great not to have to educate your own doctor about that!

Here's the link to the Mothering articles on circumcision. I've read a bunch of them and can't remember which one I sent to my brother. HTH!
