My husband and I have been married for 9 months, and are planning to ttc soon. He is a PhD student, well-funded, and we live frugally. We are living in China for the next few months for his research, and I'm not allowed to work on my visa. We are lucky to have medical insurance through his university, but they don't cover midwives so if I really want that, then it'll cost us about $3k.
The thing is, we have about $40k left in student loans, and have been throwing as much money as we can at that. Since he's in school, his are deferred and not gathering much interest so we want to take advantage of that. Mine actually have to be paid. We have no CC debt, but we also have very little in savings. I have a little bit of retirement, and one CD.
Other than money for the midwife, how much would we need to have saved up for, say, the first year? I'll be getting everything used if possible, and I often cross the line from frugal to plain ol' cheap.
ETA: It's been so long since I've been on MDC, that I didn't realize that I asked a very similar question a couple of years ago when I was hoping more than planning. I found it in my list of subscribed threads
