Dollar a wipe--that's nuts when cheapie flats are a buck and you could make several wipe for that. Oh well. That's awesome your daughter is learning to sew. My son is allowed to use my machine. Nothing fancy for him at this point--just familiarizing.

And if you don't have a machine or don't feel crafty, the little baby washcloths are also very inexpensive. I like the ones that are sold rolled up. They're very thin, but I think that makes them better for cleaning the little rolls and creases nicely. I just bought a dozen new ones at a thrift store for $1.

Making them is a perfect sewing lesson for a very new beginner, though, and for someone who sews well it's a piece of cake. If you don't have scrap clothing, material, extra receiving blankets or baby towels to use, you could also buy cheap receiving blankets, etc. from garage sales or thrift stores.

I'm wondering how many cloth wipes to make sure I have on hand... Any suggestions? TIA

At first I used those dollar store wipes. But they aren't very absorbant.
Then I made some out of flannel and they worked ok, but once DS got on solid foods I need something more grippy.
I ended up cuttin up some old towels and it works FABULOUS. Very grippy, warm, and gets him really clean.
If you make them about the size of your open hand you'll only need one per change. So have as many as you have diapiers, plus extra for poopy dipes. Plus extra if you have multiple change stations in your house.

Nothing against the person that wrote it, but wiping with a "clean" corner of the dipe can spread bacteria. I mean, I scrape off the poo from front to back as I take the dipe off. But...

As for detergent. I think the most popular is country save. Here's a link that helped me decide which to go with.

Hope I helped.

I used baby washcloths from Target, regular washcloths, and rags for wipes. They didn't look all that cute folded up in our bedroom but oh, well. Good luck!
