Pregnant and New to Melbourne - need advice

Hello! I'm from the U.S., pregnant, and moving to Melbourne in early August for a year. We just found out today that I have Vasa Previa. I've learned that I am extremely blessed that they caught it; most often it is found only after delivery when it is too late and the baby has perished. The solution is to deliver the baby as soon as possible, which of course means a C-section. My two others were vaginal so I'm a little concerned about the unknown. We know no one in Melbourne, we don't qualify for public insurance, and of course private considers pregnancy a pre-existing condition. It's all part of the adventure!

We're looking to live in Baldwyn North. I would be extremely grateful for any advice on a public hospital. Is Mercy a good one? Their rates seem best for out-of-pocket. Also, we'll bring clothes, but will need to stock up on all the baby essentials. Are there any groups that host large garage sales or swap meets specifically for baby stuff? We arrive early August and baby will be born sometime in October. I will be hoping for 10.10.10. At least, perhaps, something fun might come out of this.

Any other advice on doctors, support groups, schools...anything for a Yankee coming in for a year would be MOST appreciated. This move felt overwhelming back when things were "normal." I'm trying to focus on the positive...I'm one of the lucky ones who they diagnosed early. For that I am truly grateful.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Cheers,
Lili

Dear Lili,
Not much time til ds wakes up. I joined the forum a minute ago. I guess you mean North Balwyn. If so, I know an independent midwife and her support group in the area (she is in Blackburn South). In fact tomorrow is the last meeting of this term. I'm sure she'll give you advice and information. If you are still looking, and interested, mail me off list.
Best wishes,
Petra

Hi,

Welcome to Australia.

I used to work at the Austin hospital and the Mercy is now attached to it (same campus). I have had two friends have a total of 3 babies there since then and I have only heard good reports. I'm afraid I don't know about their rates but I imagine they would be fairly similar across the board.

All the best with your move and new little one.

Regards
Kate
