What's in my closet (had to share)

I just went through my closet in preparation for my move and was so excited because I didn't find much to get rid of! That's the opposite of me usually, but it means I actually wear most everything in my closet! I wanted to share what I have and a few pieces I plan to buy to round it out. I like to wear very basic clothes (except cute skirts, those are my weak spot), and I've restricted myself to mainly black, denim, brown/tan/khaki, shades of purple, and green. I do have other colors in my wardrobe but as those pieces need to be replaced I plan to replace them with the above colors. I might even pick just one color (ie. purple OR green) in the future. So I'm sure this will sound really boring for some of you, but I'm pumped.

Here's what's in my closet:

*Dressy: one red kind of casual dress, one black fancy prom-type dress JIC, one pair black dress pants, one black skirt, one blue business/dressy blouse, one blue cardigan. I'd like to get one more dressy/church shirt that would work with the black skirt OR over my red dress since it is a sleeveless dress.

*Basic/everyday: two pairs jeans, one pair khakis, a long and a short denim skirt, a short khaki skirt, two fun casual skirts (one my sis made for me!), two fun sarongs (for use as swimsuit coverups but they will also work over yoga pants and stuff and they do match my wardrobe), 5 long-sleeved shirts T-shirts (3 black, 1 purple, 1 white), a bright orange hoody (I wear this ALL the time but need to replace it in a color I can wear with more ), a black polo, 5 short-sleeved T-shirts (1 tan, 1 green, 1 brown sparkly, 1 patterned blue and 1 patterned orange that are both reaching the end of their attractive life and will be gone/replaced soon), 3 sleeveless shirts (1 brown, 1 green, 1 black), and a brown maternity tank top that I love even when not pregnant.

*I do have some maternity stuff saved: one pair each jeans, khakis, black pants, and shorts, several shirts, and two nursing bras.

*Not really appropriate for out & about : gray yoga pants (I also want to buy another pair in black or a fun color), one pair cut-off shorts and a white T-shirt for messy projects, 4 exercise and lounging shirts (2 long-sleeved, 1 short-sleeved, 1 sleeveless), 2 sleep tanks and 2 pairs of sleep shorts.

*Other: underwear (12 pairs plus a couple special pieces of lingerie), socks (12 pairs white, 2 pairs black, 2 pairs tan/brown). I plan to replace my white socks and underwear before the move, they are all getting old. Then two regular bras, one stretchy one (very comfortable but not very flattering, for lounging around), one sports bra (I may get another), one strapless bra, swimsuits (I have two but I'd like to get one nice one-piece and get rid of both of them), a pair of nylons, and a pair of warm gray tights.

And that's it! That's all that's in my closet!

I don't know if anyone but me will appreciate that, but I HAD to share my morning project.

I wish I were decluttered enough to post what's in my closet.

You rock!

Awesome job!! I have been working on this as well. Here is what is in my closet.

2 dresses
1 sweatshirt
4 long sleeve t-shirts
3 short sleeve t-shirts
4 sleeveless shirts
2 pairs jeans
2 pairs black yoga pants (one is for messy projects)
3 pairs shorts
10 pair underwear
2 bras (I need 1 more. I just threw one out cuz the underwire broke.)
8 pair socks
1 pair pajamas
1 bathing suit and a beach cover-up
2 zip-up hooded sweatshirts (1 warm for winter and 1 cooler for fall/spring)
1 pair sneakers
1 pair dress-up shoes
1 pair flip flops

I guess it's eeasier for me cuz I hate shopping for clothes. I always have. I wear things until they are absolutely worn out and then I just replace it with what I need. I stay at home with my kids, so I don't need special stuff for work. I also do laundry every 2-3 days (even on vacation), so that lets me get by with less.

OMG! I love everyone's realistic and usable wardrobe!!! I want that, bad! I will get there! Question... About how many feet of bar or how many drawers does it take to put away your stuff? That would be so good to know in planning my great big family closet.

Oh, I totally can answer that question. I estimate a foot and a half of hanger bar. And then one drawer of one of those Rubbermaid rolling storage carts for my underwear and socks and stuff.

My DS is falling asleep in there right now so I don't want to disturb him, but I'll measure the bars later or tomorrow and let you know if I'm significantly off on the 1.5 feet.

I went shopping tonight and found a swimsuit! So now I can chuck or give away the two old ones. It was on sale too!

Wow...you guys are my heroes! I SO want to get to this point and I'm on the road but I think I'll do some major purging over the next year, as I slowly get my body back from this baby. I've already tossed most of my maternity clothing (what doesn't fit anymore) into my garage sale pile and that has been a relief! During my mass decluttering this year, I definitely got rid of a lot...I just have way further to go!

I was wrong in my estimation last night. My hanging clothes all fit in about a foot of closet bar space. If everything that is currently dirty or in use was hung up, maybe 13 inches.

My stuff takes up about 10" of bar space and 2 drawers (1 for pants/shorts and 1 for sock/underwear/pj's).

DH has twice as much stuff as me and it takes up about 2 ft of bar space and 3 drawers.

Right now DC have 6 shorts/t-shirt outfits, 1 bathing suit, 1 dressy outfit and 2 pants/shirt outfits hanging in their closet. I use the hangers with the clips and hang their stuff in outfits (bottoms and tops on the same hanger) so they can match when they dress themselves. This takes up about 2 1/2-3 ft of bar space. Then they each have about 10 pairs socks, 12 underwear, 2 pairs pj's and share a drawer (their choice).

So total that is about 4 1/2-5 ft of bar and 6 drawers. (7 drawers if my DC decide they want their own drawer).

HTH!

I LOVE this thread! We may be setting up a mini nursery in our walk-in closet for baby #3's first 8 months until our lease is up here...so I really need to get it together!

For anyone who wants to post some pics, please do!

Thanks again for this thread!

So how are you all able to do this if you live in an area with 4 distinct seasons? I am going through summer items (I am pregnant right now, so going thru my regular things) and am letting go of 7 pieces of clothing, but egads! I still need SAHM clothes, going out clothes, a couple church outfits, and volunteer clothes (I work at my kids' school 3 days/week). I cannot seem to pare things down any more, yikes!

Happy moving!!!

We definitely have four distinct seasons - I guess that's what the long-sleeved, short-sleeved, and sleeveless shirts are for me. I obviously don't wear very many sleeveless shirts in the winter, and I don't wear very many long-sleeved shirts in the summer. All my "basic daily" clothes are a level of nice that allows me to go out and about (they'd be fine for volunteering, of course depending on where I was volunteering). I hate wearing shorts so I wear the same bottoms (skirts or pants) all year round. Where I am moving it doesn't get just stifling nasty hot very many days out of the year so I err on the warm side too. I may get one pair of shorts for the lake when I move, if I can find some that flatter me. BLEEECH shorts. So I don't know, ymmv.

I just did my hubby's closet, and if he accepts my recommendations his clothes will fit in 15" of hanger space and one drawer (just barely, it's tight in there but everything's in there except the undies, undershirt, and socks he's wearing right now. ) He also has a suit bag for a couple suit jackets - my fancy dress is in there too.

My DS's clothes that he currently wears are in three small drawers right now. I could probably get them in two. I do have more stored away though that he has yet to grow into, and also that he has already grown out of and we are saving for NextKid. Not much though, maybe two rubbermaid tubs total, including all the baby supplies we are saving.

Sorry - preggo brain I guess! I have been going thru my things and have several short-sleeved shirts that are definite Fall colors, some that are more Summer/Spring...guess I do not see much in the way of sweaters on people's lists either...I have 2 winter vests, a couple of sweaters, thicker winter slacks, etc. The wonderful lists you all have posted seem so nice and concise...I cannot seem to get mine down that well, lol!

4-seasons: layers.

in summer, i wear my tanks, usually with a sweater or jacket, or my long sleeved ts without a tank under and without a jacket. i prefer to be covered for sun protection and i find that it keeps me cooler (desert people stay covered for these reasons!). i also wear jeans, skirts, and dresses that i have in the summer. i sandals that i wear in the summer that go with all of my clothes.

in fall, i add a layer. tank with the long sleeved t and sweater/jacket is usualyl enough, and sometimes without the sweater. i use a big scarf (wide, soft--pashmina style) that keeps me toasty if i need a bit of extra coverage. still in dresses, skirts, jeans, and such.

in winter, i have fleeces and heavier sweaters that i might layer over the tank-long sleeved t-light sweater combo, and of course i wear the coat when going out, as well as gloves, hat, and winter scarf. smetimes, i use my "four season" scarf instead of a winter one. i also have silks for when it is extra cold, which i only bring out in winter as well. at the end of the winter season, i have my 'gear' dry cleaned and then seal it in one of those vacuum seal bags and then put it in my closet in a suitcase--i do this with all of the winter gear. since we do travel, i do keep a suitcase in my closet, but see no reason to keep it empty. we have two carry on size (and two large and two trunks plus two day packs), and so if i have to store anything, i store those things in those suitcases. currently, only the carry-ons have things stored in them.

in spring, i dress as i do in fall, and then we are back to summer.

so for three seasons, i basically wear the same wardrobe, and store the bulky winter items; in winter, i put away the lighter jackets (storing them as i do winter gear), and pull out the winter stuff. but this is really how my hall closet/wardrobe is used, so my dresser stays basically the same.

Thanks for the breakdown! We have lived in the south most of my life, home of Really Summer and Fall-Like, lol...and now having 4 more distinct seasons is throwing me for a loop, especially when I try to be low maintenance (I think I hear my husband laughing at this one!).

This gives me some good ideas - thanks!

Less than 1.5ft for bar space?!?!?! Wowie kazowie! Between my DH and I we take up probably 7 feet of bar. HIDEOUS!!! I so want to pare down... I know that I don't wear alot of the stuff I have... It's just getting the gumption up to go through everything. And my DH? "Hey, where are all of my t-shirts?"... He has like 30 t-shirts. I got rid of about 7 or 8 a few weeks ago, and it was the end of the world. He still has teal dress pants from when he was in high-school. But we are working on it all the time, and I think we'll get to the point where we have only what we need before too long. I so look forward to the remodel and the absoluteness of just having NOWHERE to go with the extra crap but OUT.

Question... In having a much more manageable wardrobe, how do you guys take into account being really tough on clothing? Hubby has a factory job, and we have a functioning farm. Stuff gets stained and ragged. So do you just have the one or two "work" outfits and run them to threads? I think that makes sense... Maybe by the time the work stuff was pooped out some of the nicer stuff would be ready to be demoted to work clothes? I really need to stop wearing my nicer jeans out to do chores.
