Why are my plants dying?

They were doing beautifully then suddenly the spinache leaves are turning white and drying up and the pea-stalks are doing the same thing. What is going on? Is it to late to save them? Please help!

Could you give us more information? What zone/region do you live in? What has your weather been like? Spinach and peas will both turn white at the end of the season (once the summer heat sets in). Could that be the case for you?

could something be tunneling underground and disturbing the roots?

Oops, sorry! I'm in N. California. There's been a lot of rain and overcast days but we did have a heat spell for a few days. I didn't know that they did that normally. The plants were not mature though. The spinach was about half-grown and the peas have not yet grown any pea pods.

I do remember seeing something that looked like a gopher hole about a month ago. What can you do if you do have a gopher problem? But then, don't they just pull the whole plants down?
