Diapers for newborns?

I'm only 14 weeks pregnant but am thinking a big ahead here. I went to Babies R Us today and saw the G-diapers and loved how easy they look! We used BumGenius inserts with DS, but they were a pain IMO. We also didn't EC him until 10 months old, and I plan to EC the new LO shortly after birth.

I don't like prefolds. I don't know what it is but I just don't like them lol. I just know that EC "rules" say to wear non-waterproof pants. But....I don't think I can handle that, especially while getting used to being a mom of 2. There may be times I can't change a diaper right away if baby doesn't seem uncomfy, KWIM? I will probably just lightly part-time EC for the first few months and then see how it goes from there.

So--anyone have any input on the G-diapers? Any other diaper ideas or input?

LOL thanks. I have been fantasizing about the g-diapers since I saw them today haha. They are so darn cute! Now I just need to know if they actually work as well as they look.

I bought two at a resale shop, $1 each!, and I've only used them a handful of times. They are supposed to velcro at the back, which I never do because it just seems weird to lay my newborn on her stomach to change her diaper. (Maybe I wouldn't have to? I don't know). Anyway, they did work as far as pee not leaking out. I layed in a variety of fabric stuffers, we have homemade stuff, so a mixture of flannel, cotton batting, zorb, chamois, microfleece, etc.... I like our Bum Genius pockets better.

When you did prefolds, did you do a trifold in a cover? I don't have many prefolds, but I've done that a few times with DD, using gerber prefolds and thirsty covers, they work fine. When DD is coverless, with a fitted diaper, she usually doesn't pee so much that she leaks all over and gets other stuff wet. The front of her diaper just feels damp.

Even though you said you don't like them, the orange-edged newborn prefolds underneath a newborn-sized cover are the bestest newborn diapers of all time. Easy fit, thick and absorbent, much less expensive than other nb cloth, easy to wash, etc. Really really worth the money, imo. If you are going to be ecing w/ G-Diapers, you are going to go thru a lot of them & that will get expensive & wasteful.

If you really, truly hate prefolds, my next vote is for good easy fitteds. We prefer velcro to snaps b/c the fit is more customizable and you are going to be doing & undoing them 234978239 times, & velcro is quicker. The BumGenius bamboo fitteds rock so hard, but bg stopped making them. You can get them used on Diaper Swappers. Otherwise, there are always tons of people selling Kissaluv size 0-1 fitteds on DS, but keep in mind that they are snap diapers and not as absorbent.

My favorite system was an absorbent pad inside a fuzzi bunz without the insert, that I basically used as a fleece-lined cover. With one-pee misses you can just change the little pad. It was sweet! I also just used fitted diapers with a cover when I knew I wouldn't be able to change her right away. It's nice to have some non-waterproof options, and it is definitely nice to have some waterproof options, imo!!!!!

I'm assuming you thought I would use the disposable inserts? The G-diapers have cloth inserts too, and that is what I would use.

Thanks all, I will keep all of these ideas in mind when it's time to buy!

I have a friend that swes and she made me fitted diapers out of pre-folds by cutting them into a contour shape (kiind of like an hour glass), surging the edges and adding velcro. They are perfect. They can be used with a wool or plu cover to be waterproofed or without a cover so that you can feel when they pee. they will hold in a pee or two but are not extremely absorbent so baby feels the wetness right away. These are perfect for us.

So not wasteful, but it could get expensive- you will need a bunch! You can probably use other things besides their inserts that would be a less expensive option. Or maybe it's not a big deal to buy 3 or 4 packs! I had about 20 prefolds and cloth inserts that I used, and I did laundry just about every day. Little ones pee a lot. (as in frequently, the good news is that the quantity is small!)

Well, I have 6 of the BG pockets and inserts. What I'm thinking is I would use those for night time only, so then I'd have a few extra BG inserts to use during the day, along with however many G-diaper inserts I get, plus you can use prefolds as an insert. I usually do laundry every day anyways, so I'm planning to do the diapers the same at that time.

I like talking this out to you all to see if I'm making any sense lol. CDing a newborn will definitely be different than a 10 month old!
