Treating dry/damaged hair with food products?

I always hear things like putting eggs in your hair (I've even heard mayo!) will make it healthier. I'm willing to try anything. My hair is in really bad shape. I've also heard dying it can actually help it. Thoughts?

Just finished reading Julie Gabriel's The Green Beauty Guide book and she recs using egg yolk alone or egg yolk with a few squirts of Dr. Bronner's for washing hair. Other ideas included putting a few drops of jojoba oil into your shampoo (if you use) and trying olive oil or jojoba oil for conditioners. Avocado was also rec'd. I have to admit I tried the jojoba oil--maybe a quarter-sized amount for my short hair and holy moly!!! It was so so greasy! I was kind of excited to know my straw-like hair (prematurely gray) could actually be greasy! LOL! I colored my hair only one time with traditional colorants about 8 years ago and it WAS so very soft. But I have concerns about coloring and won't repeat it. I'd rec using a few drops of olive oil or jojoba to start with to make sure you're not trying to wash it out with baking soda followed by apple cider vinegar rinse for the next week! (And that did work to get it out, too!!!).

I've done mayo and I swear by it - the combo of eggs and oil is heavenly! Instead of mayo, you could just whip egg yolks and oil together to make a hair mask. Leave it on for as long as you can (wrap your head in a towel) and then shampoo out. It leaves your hair so shiny and smooth!

I've also done just straight coconut oil and I love that as well but for me, the combo of egg yolk and oil is the best.

I switched to a shampoo bar that is mostly oils (coconut, avocado, etc) and I love it. I've also used vegetable glycerin (tiny amounts) on the ends of wet hair to make them smooth, but the shampoo bar is a little more consistent and I don't have to worry about using too much of something and having it come out greasy-looking.

(I tried mayo when I was in jr high and OMG it was a disaster. I used a ton as a conditioner (didn't shampoo after) and couldn't get it all out, and when it dried it still looked soaking wet, it was so greasy! I never did that again, although I know if you use moderation and shampoo it out, it'll likely work much better...)

I definitely recommend some coconut oil in very sparing amts and follow with vinegar rinse. Also, you can stop shampooing daily and at LEAST everu other day just do a conditioner wash instead. Shampoo is SO bad for your hair. I know that sounds funny but it strips moisture to clean your hair and it ennds up drying it out. I would only shampoo every other day at the most. It's good for your hair to take a break from shampoo once in a while. See if you can stretch it to every three days by rinsing your hair with water in the shower really well but not shampooing. I think you'll be surprised. My dry curly hair hasn't seen shampoo in over a week and it doesn't look even the slightest bit greasy.

You definitely have to use it as a hair mask / intense conditioner and then shampoo it out. You can't just rinse it out.

I have had great success with olive oil as a deep conditioner- then a light shampoo. As well as using coconut oil to treat frizz, and help with dry ends.

I tried olive oil a long time ago and it took over a week and several washes to get out. It was really embarssing going out in public! lol So, I'm a little scared to try that one again. Maybe I should. My hair wasn't dry and damaged like this back then. Thank you for all the great tips!

The best thing I ever did for my hair was to buy a water filter for my shower. We have a ton of chlorine in our water and it dries my hair out terribly. If on a well, I used to rinse at the end with bottled water ... it was a pain, but well worth the effort.

Rinse your hair with rain water to make it really soft and shiny. If it's dry I put a satchel of oats in my bath and make an oat milk bath to bathe my hair in.

Coconut oil. I bought a mason jar full at the grocery store and put it on the ends of my hair (from the ears down) the night before a wash (which I only do every 5-7 days).

Just to make sure, do I have to shampoo my hair after using the coconut oil? Also, should I dilute the vinegar?
