waaah...caliche in arizona!

has anyone worked around this for a tree? i dug down almost 3 feet and still barely draining at an inch per hour. is it time to give up? i did dig a chimney, about four feet deep, but haven't trenched the top yet. (the caliche starts just a few inches down--now i understand why i couldn't get decent grass in that part of the yard) i planted a watermelon hill at the top of that thinking the tap roots may help keep everything moving.

i've dealt with this in other parts of our yard but it was not this bad. there were three layers with some chunks the size of oranges. back of the yard this time...trying to plant a plum tree.

We haven't done a lot of digging in our yard yet (we moved into this house in November), but we expect to have Caliche issues when we finally decide to plant. Dh has taken a metal stake, driven it deep into the hole every foot or so then used those weak spots to break things up.
