Soymilk and Cow Milk alternative

Thread Starter
My son is allergic to milk. He is 8 and has been drinking soymilk since he was about 1.

As of late, I have learned some not so good side effects of soy and would really like to find an alternative that he will actually drink.

I hope no one takes offense at this. I posted this question at a different forum and got berated for actually stating that I believe soy is bad for you.

This is my personal belief after reading about the phyto-estrogens and other posssible side effects from soy. I would just rather not continue to feed this to my son day after day.

So, if you have any experience with alternatives that are healthy and your kids like, I would love to hear about them!

Thanks so much!

Mindy

Another vote for almond milk, I love it! It took my almost 8 year old a little bit to get used to the taste (he was used to organic cow's milk) but he likes it now too.

I give DD goats milk. The cows milk gave her eczema and digestive issues (constipation/diarrhea) but the goats milk does not. She is actually pooping regularly for the first time in a long time.

I second the almond milk. Its tasty. There is also rice milk and oat milk and hemp milk which are all fortified.

there are a couple different types of almond milk my 1.5 year old really liked. Silk makes one, as does Blue Diamond I think. They are usually around 3.29 a half gallon. Silk also makes a rice milk. I have also seen coconut milk in the natural section of my grocery store, though I havent tried it.

almond milk might work (I've never had it). I actually know several people who make their own almond milk if you can't find any without crap in it, I don't know what's availible.

Also, coconut milk is delicious and quite healthy. It tastes very sweet, and does have some (but not a TON) of sugar in it. I don't think I'd use it for drinking daily like milk, but it's a great milk substitute for occasionally, or for cooking with.

I have been looking for a healthier milk alternative for our family.

I was getting ready to buy the Blue Diamond Almond Milk but decided against it since it has Soy Lecithin in it. I do not know what it is but it did not advertise non-gmo so it was a double vote against it in my book. The Silk Almond Milk has Sunflower Lecithin in it so when it goes on sale I might try it.

I am curious if anyone knows how to make Almond Milk and what Coconut Milk does everyone drink?

my favorite is almond milk ( i buy the silk vanilla) , but i know a lot of people like hemp and coconut also. They tend to be a bit more expensive but they go on sale a lot here, so i stock up then.

We use rice milk for some things, coconut milk in a lot of things (especially baking). I liked the almond milk but DS is intolerant to it so I had to stop using it.

I would try to steer him away from "milk" and come up with other wholesome foods for him to eat. If he's thirsty, there's water or juice. If he's hungry, there's food. I understand that there's a place for something "milk-like" in certain recipes or on dry cereal sometimes, but IMO it's better to change the way you look at milk, rather than trying to find an exact replacement.

Once milk becomes a condiment rather than a staple, the nutritional content is less important. Rice milk is pretty well tolerated, although nutritionally it's more like juice than milk.

We use the So Delicious brand coconut milk for the kids. We can't do almond milk because of allergies, and rice milk because of arsenic.

Although I do not really think for us the nutritional content becomes less important. I strive to find the best of everything we consume within budget and reason.

I do not know much about rice milk. Can you explain the arsenic?
