Our k12 school requires us to teach health, but don't give us materials. This school year we just pulled from here and there the first half, then did Horizons Health K the second half, but I'm not sure if I want to continue with that program in the fall (we do the grade level assigned to the younger child in each group, and plan to do the same when dd3 and dd4 come up for it) So what do you use in elementary for health? I thought about leaving it as a life skill kind of thing, but it just doesn't sit well with us to not give it any real focus once or twice a week.

Could you take your state's health standards, and then create your own once or twice a week reading list from that? Then, you could check out a book or two from the library that covers one of the standards, read it, discuss it, and then have your kids dictate back to you something they learned. That could be typed out on the computer and they could illustrate it with an appropriate picture. Just an idea; we don't use a curriculum for health as it's more of a life skill thing around here.

In our family health learning consists of discussions surrounding grocery shopping, meal planning, illnesses as they occur, hygeine, exercise and sleep schedules. It's plenty enough. One of the great advantages of homeschooling is that it is seamlessly integrated with all those real-life health-related issues that occur in the flow of daily life. For our umbrella school I record conversations and exposures as they occur and that constitutes our 'curriculum.'

I don't have to actually show anything for health being covered, just log 36 hours over the school year (that's an hour a week, or one lesson) but I feel better if I use a program of some sort. We tried just covering stuff using library books and talking about it this year and it just didn't work out, which was why we went with Horizons Health. I just don't know what to use in fall, the Horizons is great but I just don't know............. I want to look at a few other options.
