Pricey but totally worth it, share your story! - Page 4

Lots of them!

-I bought back in 1993 a pair of birkenstock sandels. At $97, they were quite a stretch for a college student. I wore them at least 4 times weekly, over the years they walked thru 7 different countries. They died finally in 2003 when I bought my new pair. I ended up giving that pair away because I just wasnt all that into them anymore. The new owner LOVED them and will do the same as I did, but she got them free!

-DH bought 3 pairs of Mephisto shoes in Paris in 2000. They were $90 each since the exchange at the time was great for the dollar. They at home were $425 at nordstrom. They still are worn at least 4-5 times monthly since he wears them to work.

-LaCrueset pot in Paris, same trip. Very heavy but brought home and use quite often. It was $65 that trip. Its now over $350 in the stores here.

I might add, the dollar is not as strong as it was 10 years ago and it was like a gigantic sale in Paris that year because your dollar stretched bigtime against the euro/franc.

Medela pump in style. Bought in 2002 with first dd. Used to thru two babies and gave away and the new mama used it lots.

Motherwear tops. This was when it was privately owned and it was made in USA. The tops were spendy but they stayed very nice thru two babies. I gave all away and a few I see on a few friends here and there still making babies and nursing. That was 8 years ago.

Fuzzi Bunz diapers. Bought 16 brand new meds. Used for almost 3 years. I got my money's worth and them some. Again, gave away to another mama because after all those months I could not accept money for them. She still uses them and is ready to pass them to her sister who wants the "girlie" colors for her dd she is expecting after several boys.

Wolf stove:

We did our entire kitchen ourselves shedding thousands of dollars off what it would cost with a contracter so we could afford to splurge. Well worth it. I have had this stove for 3 years and it spoils me everyday!! We are also bigtime cooks so it is loved!

I love my prescription sunglasses.

I get ds pizza on a weekly basis.

Once a month I take the kids out to eat.

My chickens. They cost more than the eggs we get,but I love having them.

I keep putting it off,but when the topsoil goes on sale I want a couple yards of it.

I push dh to get REALLY good shoes.Even if he wasn't a D2 good shoes are important.Ofcourse I buy the cheap, but he deserves the good stuff.

We also have a rainbow vacuum. I love when I vacuum and the rug feels softer

We sooooooo want a vitamix. Maybe next year but I can see us having a blast with it.

To add:

we have several high end coffee makers. One for drip, one for espresso, and a grinder. About 1.5K worth of equipment. Had it for several years, we are major coffee people. Drink coffee drinks about 4 times weekly. It has paid for itself and that over many times.

Shoes. Like someone else mentioned, Chacos last forever. I have two pairs of sandals that are 3 years old and they look brand new.

Clothing, especially kid stuff - DS's 2 yo old hannas are still going strong while the old navy and other big box jammies fell apart after two months.

Butter!

Pads!

I couldn't live without them ladies! I'm a huge fan of living "green" for the health of my family... no chemicals, natural fibers, reuse/recycle BUT I'm a bigger germ freak!! Which means the one thing I will always splurg on for as long as I need them is disposable PADS (I'm talking about sanitary napkins). The thought of using the reusable flannel kind or even the cup thingy during my period always gave me the shivers (mind you, for ME... more power to the fantastic women out there that can make it all work!). In fact last night as I was blog surfing I came across a hilerious comentary on the "perfect" pad. I think every woman, whether you use disposable pads or the reusable kind, would get a kick out of this article! I loved it so much I've been telling everybody about it today LOL!! If you want a laugh it's right here... http://dealingwithdummies.blogspot.com/

To finally have internet. I know we were in the dark ages but couldn't justify it until now when DD1 will need it for research for school and we can learn so much from it.

My splurge is really a necessity in my opinion, and that is my new triple stroller. I have 10 month old twins and am expecting another LO in October so I needed a stroller to hold them all. Yes I could have used a sling for the baby but that isn't always practical. So I researched triple strollers and found the PERFECT option! It is a double on the bottom and has an infant/toddler seat on the TOP! The seat is facing you, like a kid in a shopping cart only reclined back. This stroller is sold in New Zealand and is $1600 new. So I found one on ebay almost brand new (the lady who bought it new couldn't use it because she was too short!) for $800!!!!!!! Still a LOT for a stroller but triple strollers are a lot anyway. And the cheapy ones make me nervous since this has to hold the weight of 3 kids for years to come. And the triple side by sides or the triple in lines are just too much to push/turn/fit through stores. This stroller is genius and it is WELL made! I LOVE it!!!!!!!

Here is a pic if anyone is interested or confused on my description:

I have never seen anything like it! Can you remove the seat up top or turn it around? That is pretty neat!

$800 for a Mountain Buggy w/toddler seat is a STEAL. And you'll be able to sell it for most of that when you're done with it, if you take good care of it. Great investment, mama

YMCA membership
Good quality food
Music and dance lessons for the kids
Scrapbooking items

All these are bought on sale or gotten at a great rate but they are all things I consider essential!!

DF and I bought a brownstone in January and we only just moved in - about three weeks ago, in fact. It took about five-and-a-half months to renovate the place from a somewhat neglected duplex into my beautiful, single-family dream home. All the money we spent on the house and then fixing it up has been completely worth it. We're planning on living here the rest of our lives, so we wanted things to be perfect. I must have driven our contractor crazy, what with all the changes and new ideas that I would throw at him but it's amazing now. The best splurge we could ever have possibly made or make. It's home.
