make your own panties/trainers?

I want to try my inexperienced hand at making panties and training pants (dd is 5 months). I'm going to ask in the sewing forum too, but wondered if anyone here knew:

A. if there are any free patterns out there and
B. what fabrics I'm looking for

I don't know fabrics well. I'm thinking I could use any cotton fabric, even old t-shirts or receiving blankets, right? For an absorbent panel in training pants (between two pieces of cotton), what would be best?

I used a pattern like this one:

but I made mine out of microfleece (for the outside) with three layers of flannel for the soaker and one layer of rip-stop nylon. I called them one-pee undies because they could hold one pee.

It took a bit of tweaking of the pattern to get it right but it was literally my first ever sewing project. Always remember to sacrifice your first attempt to Learning!

The way you sew it is going to depend on what you are looking for in a trainer. I sewed a bunch of waterproof side-snapping trainers when dd1 was a baby. I used PUL fabric for the outer, organic bamboo velour for the inner fabric, and two layers of microfiber for the soaker. I came up w/ the pattern myself after drawing it out based on the shape of an open diaper cover & tweaked it as I sewed my first few pairs. I sent them all out to a WAHM to have the snaps put on. They worked really well & I am still able to use the couple larger pairs I made as swim diapers for dd1 right now (they are too tight to pull up and down on her now, lol). Finished, they resemble Daisy Doodles and Megaroos.
