Needle felting question please help!

I'm pretty new to the world of needle felting but have fallen in love with it! I would like to try to make a needle felted playscape (I watched the tutorial on thesilverpenny.com) my question is this: What do I use as a base of the playsacape to felt inot?? A piece of wool felt? On the silverpenny she uses some silk fabric to add color and dimension-is this optional?

no one needlefelts? I must have arrived late to the party, it seems everyone is over that particular craft!

I don't needle felt very often...I'm still learning. But I made a mat for my ds3 and I wet felted a base then needle felted on top of that. I haven't tried any other material. I remember seeing one that someone had knitted the base then added things to it. It was cool. Part of it was a farm and the other was a wooded scene complete with river and toadstools. I wish I had a picture of it.

I am making a pond right now with animals and stuff - I tried using a piece of wool felt from the craft store as the base and needle felting on that but that didn't work too well for me so I just spread out roving going both up and down and side to side and on top of my piece of foam, just started needle felting it, it took a while but it came together into a thick piece of felt and that's my base. To get it really tight I then wet felted it and let it dry before I needle felted onto it. good luck! I love needle felting
