Baby names?

Okay, I know I'm only 6 weeks, but we're trying out baby names. What are your thoughts on these ones...

We agree on a baby girl name 100%-
Magdalena Zaharoula F*********.
Magdalena is a variation or Mary (after my Grandmother) and Zaharoula is his Mother's name (he's Greek, it means "sugar"). We both love the name. Anyone see any future problems on that name that we may not have thought of?

The boy name is a bit trickier-
Either James Alexander F********* or Dimitrios Alexander F*********.
Alexander will be the middle name regardless, because we both like that name, he's always wanted a son named Alex, and we can't use it for a first name because my nephew's name is Alexander. I think my boyfriend's plan is to call the baby Alex (special name just Daddy calls him) and let everyone else use his first name. The first name, however, is what we can't agree on- the only other boys' names I like are Michael and James. Michael would have been after my deceased brother and James after a man who's been like a father to me for about 15 years now. My boyfriend vetoed Michael out right away, and he's not crazy about James. I like James Alexander- I would call him James. My boyfriend wants to go Greek- Dimitrios Alexander, and says I can call him James, the English version of Dimitrios. Not crazy about Dimitrios, but it's an okay name. I don't want to be confusing the poor child if it's a boy with his Dad calling him Alex, his Mom calling him James and everyone else calling him Dimitrios or the nickname for Dimitri. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

I know a Magdalena, they call her maggie. I think it's a nice name & not really popular. Especially with her middle name it will be very unique!

James is too common for me so out of the choices I would go with Dimitrios. I like Dimitri as a nickname.

I suggest going back to the drawing board. You're completely right - his father calling him Alex, his mother James, and everyone else Dimitrios or Dimitri? His head will spin.

So, either work, work, work - or pray that it's a girl!

lol I'm already praying it's a girl! (Not that I wouldn't love a son just as much, but I've already got a son and I've always wanted a daughter as well.)

I love the name Magdalena, but...is it actually a variation of the name Mary? Not sure about that.

Personally I like James the best of your two boy picks, but you're right-- you and DH both need to be on board so might be best to think of something else. James is my little nephew's name, btw, and he's a total doll. That's maybe why I like it lol.

Magdalena is actually derived from Greek, and means "of Magdala"...a town on the sea of Galilee. It's very strongly associated with the name Mary, though, because it's often bestowed in honor of the biblical Mary Magdalene, the woman Christ cured of the seven demons.

As for your boys' names, I love James and Michael. Michael is hardly ever heard anymore...some teacher commented on this recently in a name thread. Though it's still a popular name, so many people are trying to be unusual with their names that classic old names aren't often heard. So yeah...I love Michael. It's a beautiful, beautiful name.

Likewise, I love the name James. It's our favorite boys' name, and one of our sons has the name. There is something so incredibly dear and strong about it--and if you think of it, there are no other names that sound like it. We always called our son James, and others did as well. No nicknames. People often commented on how much they loved the name.

However, if he gets to have Alex regardless of how you feel about it, you should be able to have James regardless of how he feels about it. Just a thought.

Love your girl name. I see no issue with her middle name except at high school graduation. That poor person will need some practice! How lovely to have that family connection to it.

I love Dimitri. Go Greek! It's unusual enough, but not crazy and again, you have a family tie to it.

I think it will be interesting to see if his dad ends up calling him Alex and everyone else calls him something else. It could work. I really don't see him calling him Alex, you calling him James, and everyone else calling him something else. People are going to look to you guys as to what his name is. And if you are using James or Alex, they are going to do that too.

And if you somehow do get away with that, eventually he's going to rebel and tell you which name he wants to go by.
