Hello...
DS just got out of the hospital and found out he had the coxsackie virus(virus that causes hand foot and mouth disease)..they had him on iv fluids for two days..he started urinating normal again...we got home on wednesday and he instantly slowed down in diapers..Now i understand that an iv is going to make him go more than usual but I'm talkin 2 diapers a a day here...this really worries me...he is drinking too...i make sure he has a sippy that is always full and watch that he is drinking it...

what is going on? any guesses?

What else does he have that he needed to be on an IV? Both my kids had coxsackie last year, the younger one was still an infant. Just a fever and some discomfort. I joked I would take coxsackie over a GI bug ANY DAY! So Im a bit confused why cioxsackie ITSELF would be such an issue in an older child.

Does his urine have a pungent odor to it? When he goes those two times, is he totally soaking his diaper? How old is he? Hes hes 2 or 3, perhaps hes getting ready to PL, therefore can go a long time between urinations.

Otherwise, how is he acting? Anymore fever?

he is 14 months old...they put him on an iv because high fevers caused him to be dehydrated..we couldn't keep his fever down...so they said he had lost 10 percent of his water...

now he is acting fine..clingy but playful. he hasn't had a temp all day...and now he's not soaking the diaper....he's barely peeing at all....this is how he was the day we took him into the er...but that day he was lethargic and high fever

What are you giving him for fluids? Its not very homepathic, but when my kids needed to up their fluids big time (little one had a gi bug for almost a month that caused explosive diarhea) they would drink pedialyte like CRAZY. But my kids didnt nurse past a year. Even if hes still nursing, would you be willing to try some pedialyte?

Mine had probable herpangina (very similar virus) last year and I got to where I was syringe-feeding him coconut water because he couldn't open his mouth. Coconut water is awesome stuff. It's what Gatorade, Pedialyte, et al. are trying to imitate with their electrolyte compounds, and it WORKS. You can get it at any hfs.

I would keep an eye on the diapers and watch for signs of dehydration. I can be normal for it to take several days for a child to drink and eat at the usual level. If his mouth has sores you may want to medicate for that so he can hydrate properly.

Barbie, HFM is like chicken pox, some kids get it worse than others.

OP, You rson is still so little, I would steer clear of gatorade when trying to stay hydrated.

Coconut water is fine for little ones. It's totally natural and coconut is I think the only food that has high levels of lauric acid (similar profile to breastmilk).
