Argh! DS's mattress smells like pee.

He's always been a night-wetter, and even with pull-ups and a protective mattress pad, his mattress STILL has the stink. So I think we're going to try and put it outside in the sun for the weekend -- it's supposed to be really hot here.

But other than that -- should I spray something on it? Vinegar? TTO? That pet urine stuff?
thanks,

Nature's Miracle (you can get it at Petco or Petsmart) is my favorite for getting pee smell out. And yes, if you sit it in the sun today (IF your ds does not have allergies) that would be okay, too. Otherwise I would mist it with NM every time you change the sheets, let it breathe until bedtime, and then put the sheets on.

also, occasionally have it steam cleaned by a carpet/furniture steam cleaning company or rent a steam cleaner (that would have a hose attachment for steam cleaning soft furnishings).

i tend to do this seasonally (either have it professionally done or do it myself depending upon the time that i have. i do it on the day that i flip the mattress and adjust the level of warmth of the bedding. i typically have the bedding dry cleaned (organic) as well. quilts, wool blankets, and all that. i wash the sheets weekly, of course, but will wash them on that day too.

eg, at the end of winter, the heavy blankets are dry cleaned and put into a vacuum sealed "space bags" so that they stay clean until next winter. i then bring out the spring/summer/fall bedding (a light quilt and a lighter blanket for spring/fall), and make the bed with that.

so, the bed is dry by the end of the day, and then i make it and we go to sleep on a fresh, clean mattress.

seasonally works best for me. i'm just about to turn/steam our bed (next week) for this season. this weekend, i cleaned out our closets putting warm gear in the vacuum bags; pulling out cold weather clothes and putting them away. i had the bedding cleaned last weekend (due to a fear of bed bugs, that we did not have), so we are good to go for the bed for next week.

sunning and Bac-Out (or Nature's Miracle pet solution) is what I recommend, but you really need to soak the mattress with the stuff so it will need a day or two to dry out. You should soak it and then blot all you can up and then soak it again and then blot it up again, etc. It will probably still have some odor for a few days after it dries, but then it will go away. If he's still having trouble wetting can you look into a more waterproof mattress protector?

When my son wet our mattress, I used Bac-Out on it, just like the PP said. Worked get in the sense that there's no smell...however, our mattress is now stained either from the pee, the water I used to dilute it, or the Bac-Out.

Nature's Miracle, all the way. You can buy it at pet stores. It's an enzymatic cleaner. You soak the urine spot (old, fresh, whatever) and let it sit for as many hours as you can (overnight is best) until it's dry. One of our children had a pee accident in our brand new bed once (completely white) and it soaked through the mattress cover and sheets and left a big yellow circle. I soaked the entire area with Nature's Miracle, and maybe 5 or 6 hours later, the mark was completely gone, and once it was completely dry, I couldn't even smell a thing either.

I have used it with amazing results on cat markings, accidents, vomit marks, etc. Gotta love it!
